குறளின் குரல் - 197

துன்னியார் குற்றமும் தூற்றும் மரபினார்

என்னைகொல் ஏதிலார் மாட்டு.

                (குறள் 188: புறங்கூறாமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

thunniyAr kuRRamum thURRum marabinAr

ennaikkol EdhilAr mATTu

thunniyAr -  Even with the close friends and relatives

kuRRamum - finding faults 

thURRum - and slander them

marabinAr - those who have such slanderous tongue

ennaikkol - What wouldn't they do

EdhilAr - others (who are not their relatives and friends)

mATTu - with 

There is a subtle humor in this verse. We see in our daily conversations, some people wondering like this: "With friends like this, do we need enemies?" When someone slanders the close friends and relatives, what would he/she not speak about others, especially people that are not in friendly terms with them? Allusion here is that people of slandering nature, will make everybody their enemy. 

The question asked in this verse tells us something significant. We should be very careful being friends with slanderers!

"Slanderer that ill-speaks even his friends and relatives

 What would he do with or would he spare, the strangers?" 

தமிழிலே:

துன்னியார் - தமக்கு  மிக நெருங்கிய நண்பர்கள் மற்றும் உறவினர்களையும்

குற்றமும் - அவர்களது தவறுகளை

தூற்றும் - பிறரிடத்தில் தூற்றி மற்றும் புறங்கூறிப் பேசுகிற

மரபினார் - இயல்பினை உடையவர்

என்னைகொல் - என்ன செய்வாரோ

ஏதிலார் - அயலார் 

மாட்டு - இடத்தில் 

வள்ளுவரின் இக்குறளில் ஒரு மெல்லிய நகைச்சுவை ஊடாடுகிறது. இன்றைய சொல்வழக்கில் கூட நாம் இவ்வாறு சிலர் வியப்பதைப் பார்க்கிறோம். “இது போன்ற நண்பர்கள் இருந்தால் தனியாக பகைவரே வேண்டாம்” என்று சிலர் சொல்வதை நாம் கேட்கிறோம்.  தமக்கு நெருக்கமான நண்பர்களையும் உறவினர்களைப் பற்றியுமே ஒருவர் புறங்கூறிப் பேசினால், அவருக்கு இணக்கமில்லாத மற்றவர்களைப் பற்றி என்ன செய்வார் அல்லது சொல்லுவார்? இத்தகைய குணத்தினர், தங்களின் புறங்கூறும் தன்மையினால் எல்லோரையுமே பகையாக்கிக் கொள்ளுவர் என்பதுதான் உள்ளுரைக் கருத்து.

இக்குறளிலே கேட்கப்படுகிற கேள்வியின் வழியாக சொல்லப்படுகிற செய்தி, புறங்கூறுவாரோடு எல்லோருமே எச்சரிக்கையாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதுதான்.
