குறளின் குரல் - 78

தம்மின்தம் மக்கள் அறிவுடைமை மாநிலத்து

மன்னுயிர்க் கெல்லாம் இனிது.

                     (குறள் 68: மக்கட்பேறு அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

Thammin thammakkaL aRivudamai mAnilaththu

mannuyirkkellAm inidhu

Thammin  - More than themselves (the parents)

thammakkaL – their children

aRivudamai – being more educated and knowledgeable

mAnilaththu – in this big world

mannuyirkkellAm  - for living all beings

inidhu – is good

Interpretting the word “thammin” (தம்மின்) in this verse is tricky, in this verse. It does not mean that the parents have to make their children better than them and it will be good for the society. Then it presupposes that the parents are already at certain level of knowledge and the children have to be better than them. If there are qualifiers in the verse that are indicative of parents “acknowledged” knowledge level, then may be it could make sense that way.

The verse means thus, children being knowledgeable, is useful to the society more than the parents, which implies it is a selfless service that every parent must do to the society to bring up children that are useful to the society at large. Giving birth to children is not for personal gains, thinking that they wil take care of their parents during their old age.  Obviously when the children are useful to the society their fundamental values are good and hence the parents will be taken care of as part of the society at large too.

“Having children of erudition, more useful to the world

Than themselves is, parents duty for societal good”

தமிழிலே:

தம்மின் – தம்மை விடவும்

தம் மக்கள் – தம்முடைய புதல்வர்களும் புதல்விகளும்

அறிவுடைமை – அறிவில் சிறந்தவர்களாக இருத்தல்

மாநிலத்து - பெருவுலகத்து

மன்னுயிர்க்கெல்லாம் - வாழுமுயிர்களுக்கெல்லாம்

இனிது – இனியவை பயப்பதாகும்

இக்குறளைப் பொருள் செய்யும்போது, “தம்மின்” என்ற சொல்லை ‘தம்மைவிட தம்மக்கள் அறிவுடையராதல்’ என்று பொருள் கொள்ளுதல் தவறு. அது சுய பெருமை காரணம் பற்றி, ஏதோ தாம் அறிவில் சிறந்திருப்பது போலவும், தம்மைவிட தம்மக்கள் சிறந்திருந்தால் அது உலகுயிர்க்கெல்லாம் இன்பம் தருவது என்றாகிவிடும். தம்முடைய அறிவின் அளவை சமூகம் அங்கீகரித்த அளவை குறித்திருந்தால், அதுவும் சிறந்திருந்தால், அதையும் விஞ்சி தம்மக்களுடைய அறிவுடமை இருந்தால் ஒருவேளைஅவ்வாறு சொல்லலாம்.

 எனவே, ‘மாநிலத்து மக்களுக்கெல்லாம் தம்மை விட இனிமையைத் தரும்’ என்று ஒரு பொதுநல நோக்கிலே கூறப்பட்டிருப்பதாகக் கொள்ளவேண்டும். இதில் ஒரு பெற்றோர்க்கு தம்முடைய நலத்தைவிடவும், சமுதாயநலத்தில் அக்கரை இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதை உள்ளுரையாகச் சொல்லியிருப்பதை கவனிக்கவேண்டும்.
