May 27th, 2012

Transliteration:
aRaththu + Aru – The gains of staying virtuous
idhuvena  - this is what we get (by staying virtuous)
vENDA  = don’t be blinded by what you see
sivigai – the palanquin
poruththAnODu  - bearer of palanquin
UrndhAn – the who rides in the palanquin
iDai – between the two (palanquin bearer/rider)

When we look at the palanquin bearers and the person who is travelling in the same, two thoughts can arise. We may attribute the causal effect of virtuous ways to the person sitting inside the palanquin and the curse of ill deeds to the persons who are carrying the palanquin. This kind of comparison, implied in some scriptures as text book thoughts should not bias us in deciding them as the result of virtuous ways or otherwise. It is simply not prudent.

If one has to bear the burden of ill deeds, does it mean that the person inside or the palanquin, is such a burden? First and foremost thing to bear in mind is that the virtuous people, would not live in somebody’s toil. Also, the virtuous people would not mind any type of job as inferior and nothing would be construed as a burden of curse, but the call of duty.

We have to remember the story of Thirungnana Sambadhar (the child saivite saint poet). Appar (aka Thirunavukkuarasar) carried the palanquin of Sambandar, though he was much older to Sambandar. He was the  oldest of the four tamil saivaite saints, who were important figures in the Bhakti movement. Appar cherished it as a gift to carry the embodiment of virtue, the great saint. Neither was he non-virtuous nor Sambandar was a burden of ills. It was a story of virtue carrying virtue and implies even to carry virtue one has to basically virtuous.

So, vaLLuvar underlines in this verse that unfitting metaphors should not be used to be  decide who is virtuous or not.  Also he implies that being virtuous is not done out of fear or expecting a return on investment. We should tread the virtuous path for its absolute merit and because it is the only right way to be!

The phrase “pondRungAl pondRath thuNai” in the previous kuraL was also not to give it as an incentive for people to stay virtuous but as a factual benefit.

Palanquin bearers and the traveler inside do not bear testimony
To stand as a measure of ones virtuosity and decide his destiny
