Transliteration:
thamporuL enbatham makkaL avarporuL
thamtham vinayAn varum

thamporuL enba - One’s wealth is
tham makkaL – his own offsprings, progeny
avar poruL – what the children get in their lives as wealth (virtue, family, education etc.)
thamtham  - their own
vinayAn  - deeds of good and bad
varum –  because of that, will come

Wealth for a person is having good children. This happens due to good deeds of the person during the lifetime. Good deeds of parents will make the children live well. Their bad deeds will adversely affect the children. This is what has been summarized in this verse.

Most commentators have given a confused picture of this verse. The seed for the same is in the phrase “avar poruL” and the way it has been interpreted. Does it mention the children or the parents themselves?  The phrase “avar poruL” could mean the children of the children (indirect reference) or the desirable attributes of the children such as good character, education, family etc,.  To alleviate this confusion, let’s try to look at this verse in two more perspectives.

Alternate meaning 1:  The wealth for parents is their own children. When the deeds of children are vitruous, then, they will have good offsprings. The idea expressed here seems so ordinary to waste a verse, and don’t think, vaLLuvar would have wasted a verse like this.

Alternate meaning2: The wealth for parents is their own children. The wealth earned by those children such as result of the children’s good deeds, will benefit the parents not only in the present birth, but in future rebirths too. This is in line with ideas that have been already expressed in previous chapters.

“Wealth for parents is their progeny who earn wealth of goodness
To make their parents live in this life and beyond, with happiness.

ezhupiRappum – in all seven births (due to causal effect of our deeds)
thIyavai – ill effects, troubles
thINDA  - wont touch us
pazhipiRangA – if, blame free
paNbuDai  -  virtuously behaved
makkat  -  children
peRin -  we have.

This verse, states that if parents have blamefree children with good virtuous character, their life will not be ill-fated or full of troubles, trials and tribulations, not only in this birth but in all their seven births.

Andal in her two passurams mentions about “eZhEzh piravi”. So  is Sundarmoorthi nAyanAr in his ThiruvAlankATTu padhigam. The concept of eZehEzh piravi makes it “seven times seven” which is 49 births.  vaLLuvar mentions seven births. We don’t how many real births are there, which is a matter beyond our surmise and is cannot be questioned because it is also a matter of theology. Regardless, based on ones good and bad deeds in one life will be the subsequent lives.

Without bothering about the seven births, even in this life, having virtuous children will not let any tribulations affect us a in a big way.

When children are of blamefree character, worries of woes won’t touch
The parents for all their seven births, as they are blessed souls as such

21st June, 2012

This chapter talks about progeny of people that lead a good household. Though vaLLuvar talks about children in neutral sense in the first eight verses, the commentators have interpreted the verses purely pertinent to male offsprings only, which could be due to the societal set up of their times. World has evolved and so have thoughts and in today’s context, the interpretations won’t hold good for any right thinking person.

Parimelazhagar has made an insinuating comment in the very first verse regarding female children. The verse has a phrase, “arivaRindha makkaL”” (அறிவறிந்த மக்கள்). The way he interprets is this: ‘Knowing all that is there to be learned is not applicable to female children, and hence the word “makkaL” does not apply to female children’. This posture could simply be an individual’s opinion or the collective dominant posture of the society of his times. The same interpretation is what we see throughout this chapter. Regardless, I have attempted to stay neutral keeping with times and more than that, my personal belief.

vaLLuvar has used the word “magan” explicitly only in the last two verses meaning the male child. In other verses, he has used the word “makkaL” in the general sense of children.

perumavatRuL yAmarivadhu illai aRivaRindha
makkTpeRu alla piRa

perumavatRuL – Among the things worthy of having
yAmarivadhu – from what we know
illai  - there is nothing (other than)
aRivaRindha – (children that have) learned whatever needs to be learned
makkTpeRu  - the children
alla  piRa = -nothing other than them.

A family is a continuing unbroken chain of lineage and for it to be so, good children are essential. When a female child grows up and gets married to a male, she is construed to be an instrument and reason to grow “his” family as she becomes part “his” family. This has been a long continuing societal setup. For a family to grow and continue generations after generations, male offsprings are absolutely needed – is the belief that has continued for generation, including today.

But, when we see a family unit, both male and female children have to be viewed equally at least until a female child is married off into another family and become part of that family.

This verse says, that there is nothing greater and better that we know other than having the children that have gained knowledge by learning whatever appropriate is there to learn.

Good wife, family and children are essential to a man to realize the Godhead.

As parimelazhagar said, if we have to think that the pursuit of knowledge is “not” for female children, then the work of vaLLuvar would have lost the reason for the title, “Common code book of the world”! Also, a knowledgeable poetess like AuvayyAr would not have sung in praise of vaLLuvar or his works.

Among the things worthy of having, there is nothing we know better
Other than learned progeny with knowedge that is essential and utter

Mangalam enba manaimAtchi matradhan
Nankalam nanmakkat peRu

Mangalam – True blessing beauty for a household
enba -  is
manaimAtchi – when the household is glorious and blessed with all wealth.
matradhan- other than that
Nankalam  - jewel or ornamentation of such life
nanmakkat  - is having good children that are
peRu - priceless boon or gift

In this last verse of this chapter, vaLLuvar, concludes that a glorious family is filled with all blessings. For such family, to grow as unbroken lineage, having good children is beautifying jewellery. Incidentally, this verse is a precursor to the following chapter on “blessing of children”.

Almost all the commentators have had a posture of male-sidedness for their commentary to interpret “manai mAtchi” as “manaiviyin mAtchi” (glory of wife). Though it could be interpreted that way, in this verse, it is obvious he has talked about the righteous household, the family unit. By just having a virtuous wife, a family does not get the glory. It is the combined posture of both partners of life to make it glorious.  The straightforward meaning would simply be, “glory of the family unit”. Also, having good children is a common good for both parents, not just to a father.

All commentators for kuraL have been males and no wonder they have done interpretations suiting their stance. If there had been even one female commentator or educator that had considered writing commentary, it would be interesting to see how they would have viwed this work. Even vaLLuvar has written the work from his stance as a male most of the times, but to a milder extent. But the commentators have exaggerated the same and enforced their male centric/sided view more forcefully.

A righteous household is a place of beauty and the boon; and the blessing
Is the good children that are jewels adorning the beauty as pretty dressing

Transliteration:
Pugazhpurin dhil ilOrk killai igazhvArmun
eRupOl pIdu nadai

pugazhpurin(dha) – seeking glory by being virtuous and chaste (seeking glory for the right reason is good!)
il ilOrkku – one who does not have such wife
illai  - they don’t have
igazhvArmun – before the people that speak derisively
eRupOl – like a lion
pIdu nadai – proud gait, walk

When the wife does not conduct herself virtuous and chaste, all the blame, mock, scoff and sneer will be on her husband. The world would even call him to be an Ox, in a derogatory, derisive way. He will not have the gait of a lion which is the symbol of pride and dignity.

When a country loses its glory the head of the country is pointed as the sole reason for that. Such is the case, when a business establishment does not function properly; its leader is blamed for failures. Likewise, when a family does not function properly, its sole blame goes to the head of the family, the husband.

Every set up in society, administrative, business and family has to have a lead person; the head of the household is a husband. His support and life long partner is wife. If she does not seek the right glory by staying immaculate in her conduct and is supportive to her husband to lead the life smoothly for others to be happy and proud, then her husband will be a subject of redicule. They will call such husband as spineless and even as senseless as Ox (highly unfair to that animal!), according to ParidhiyAr, another commentator of kuraL.  My verse for today has been written to reflect both thoughts.

“A wife not seeking glory with impeccable conduct, is no cheer
For her man to keep gait like lion but an Ox for people to sneer”

petRAr  - one who is married to the woman husband)
peRin – if worships (this is a surmised meaning of earlier commentators)
peRuvar – what good comes out of ( worshipping the husband)
peNdir – for women (this is said in general to all woman who are married)
perunj chiRappup – great goodness and glory
puththELir  - refers to the Gods
vAzhum ulagu – the world of (Gods), the abode

Reading this verse, we have to rearrange the words to make sense as earlier commentators have written. All commentators from Parimelazhagar to the recent ones, have interpreted the ‘petRAR peRin” part as, “ the woman who worships her husband”.

This again will have equality seekers’ eyebrows raised!  The word “petRAR” (பெற்றார்) mean the husband of a woman, beyond doubt. However, the interpretation of the word “peRin” sounds more convoluted and a subject to close scrutiny.

The word “petRi” means, character and tempered manners. If we do a straight interpretation, (petRaR – one who has petRi)  the woman who has a husband with good character and manners will most definitely be in good path and be stead in great character. Such women will have a glorious place in the heavens, seems a more of an acceptable meaning to the verse.

Though I started writing today’s  verse comparable to the meaning of the original, after I finished writing, “kOdhayai koNdADum viNNOr ulagu”, I felt it is not the woman but her virtuous ways that are celebrated by the heavens. So, I changed the verse and wrote the second one. Subsequently, while writing the commentary, I felt that the earlier commentaries do not do justice to the verse and it is imperative to write a verse indicative of what the real meaning should be as I have mentioned in the previous para. Hence, the three verses of today.

Woman that adores her husband’s relationship
heavens  will celebrate her as, worthy of worship

Based on my interpretation:

Woman whose husband is of great character and manner
Will be  celebrated as worthy of glory in heaven’s manor

thalai – is the first and foremost (for women)

The summary substance of this verse is: Keeping the women in the chaste and virtuous path is the only way to protect them and their honor. Caging them and raising fence around them in the name of protecting their honor is indeed demeaning and can not accomplish what is intended.

A subtle idea is effectively conveyed through this verse. Only a husband who helps his wife to travel the virtuous path of family life can keep her chaste and pristine. By enslaving the wife and treating her as a property to be fenced from other view can only wound the honor and self respect of a wife and can result in the opposite of intended.

A woman in a satisfied family life can keep herself chaste. Though the concept of chastity is applicable to both a man and his wife (as has already been mentioned), a woman being the guiding force of a household, it has been mentioned specifically for her. By treating a wife as a slave, a husband may lose her respect eventually and that stems in undesired side effects getting lured to greener pastures in some cases After all human mind has the right and ability to evaluate constanty what is best for it.

Being chaste is the best protection for women – A fence
To protect them could do what but their honor offense?

thaRkonDAR -  one who is married to self
pENi  - saving him from any badmouthing by others  about her
thagai chAndRa – to be proud of
soRkAththus  - keeping the marital vows exchanged, without vacillating
sOrvilAL – living in a household without failing in her duties
peN – is the worth lady and a good housewife.

A wife first should stand herself in the chaste, virtuous path; this requires utmost resolve and grip of will. She must keep her husband in good stead without bringing him the blame from the society either by her conduct or by letting him go astray. Commentaor Parimelazhagar implies by saying “thaRkkondAR pENi: (தற்கொண்டார் பேணி) that she should feed her husband well to keep him healthy which seems like a matter in light vein in a serious verse like this.

Talking about a serious matter, vaLLuvar would not have diluted by saying so. The word “soRkkAththu” implies the marital vows exchanged by the husband and wife that they would be true to each other and take part in pleasures and pains of each must must be between them. Even if the husband is offcourse, wife must bring him back to the path of righteousness with her soothing ways.

A woman is one with all thes traits and leads the family lifes is fit to be called so.

Self preserving and staying chaste, saving the honor of her man
And without faltering in the marriage vows exchanged, is a woman

Dheivam thozhAL kozhunan thozhudhezhuvAL
Peyyanap peyyum mazhai

Dheivam – The Gods
thozhAL  - does not worship (Gods)
kozhunan – her husband
thozhudhezhuvAL – wakes up worshipping her husband (his supporti)
Peyyanap – if she commands the skies to rain
peyyum – pour it will be of
mazhai – plenty rains.

When a chaste wife that worships her husband everyday as she wakes up, orders the heavens to rain, heavens  heed as Gods’ command immediately, even if she doesnot worship Gods.

This verse accords Godhood to chaste women. To exemplify a virtue, it is an accepted poetic licence to speak about something in an exalted way, even if it is far from reality as we see. This verse has been used as an often quoted example to show the strength of a wife’s virtuous, chaste conduct, to let women and the world know the glory of chastity.

Two out of great epics of Tamil literature, Silappadikaaram and Manimekalai have quoted this verse directly, endorsing the thought. The author of Manimekalai calls vaLLuvar as “poyyil pulavar” meaning “poet who doesn’t lie”.

Auvayyar, in her Kondrai Vendan, says, “karppenappaduvadhu sotRriRambAmai”, which means that the chastity is preserverd when both the man and his wife respect and live by the marital vows they mutually exchanged during their wedlock. She also means it in a way that is same for both man and his wife. Though it is same for both, it is kept as an exalted virtue especially for a woman.

The mythological characters such “NallaththangAL”, “NaLAyini”, “SIthA” and “KaNNagi” are glorified and spoken about even today for they adhered to the this virtue. Among the many mythological heros, Rama has a special place for his chastitiy and being wedded to one wife. For the same reason he is acknowledged as “PurushOththamA”.

Giving in to heart breaks leading to broken marriages and divorces have become a common place occurrence in today’s society. This situation has led to the word chastity attaining archaic status and even the imaginative spree of the world of poets and morality advocates.

Chaste wife wakes up worshipping not Gods, but her husband
commands the skies to rain and they have to heed her demand

”தெய்வந் தொழாஅள் கொழுநற் றொழுதெழுவாள்;
