Transliteration:
Nilaiyin thiriyAdhu aDangiyAn thOtRam
Malaiyinum mANap peridhu

Nilaiyin – from the stance of virtuous life
thiriyAdhu  - not changing
aDangiyAn  -  one that lives a self-restrained, composed life,
thOtRam – and that persons’ greatness is,
Malaiyinum – more than a high scaling mountain’s,
mANap peridhu – bigger and better

This verse expresses and expounds a simple thought. Life of a person that does not veer from the virtuous trail with utmost restraint, composure will scale higher than the tallest peak of the tallest of mountains and be glorious.

Though the symbolism of “mountain here is to express the glorious heights, since it does not change its place or size, it also becomes the symbol of stability and unchanging nature.

The phrase “nilaiyin thiriyAdhu” means not changing regardless of growth or lack of it in a person’s life. Anything of external manifestation in life in general, shows the impermanence; but the inner virtues are the demonstration of a rock solid determination. This is possible only for people of utmost discipline and determination while practicing virtuous life.

Glory of utmost restraint that unswervingly sustain
Scale taller than the immensity of a tall mountain

Transliteration:
seRivaRindhu – gaining awareness of virtue and fulfillment (and attaining because of that)
sIrmai  - highlighted glory
payakkum – will give
aRivaRindhu – if with sense attained by knowledge
AtRin – deeds are done
aDangap  - and that too with a lot of self-discipline, composure, humble, control, (not vainglorious or arrogant)
peRin – if be that way

Driven by the knowledge, are the virtuous ways. While deeds are virtuous, not being boastful about them, being humble and self restrained are greater traits that will yield glory to such practitioners. There are people that are superficially humble, yet overtly or covertly displaying the glory of their greatness and the farce of their humility. True glory is people of greater knowledge, with simple minds, unannounced humility and self-restrained demeanor.

Once again from aRanericharam, a verse which says that there is none the person who is humble, self-restrained, keeping only his heart as the witness to the deeds done, will not gain.

There are two verses written for today’s verse. The firstone focuses on the virtue of self-control, self-restraint and the second one focuses on the person of the same.

“Humility gained by the knowledge of virtue
Bestows glory for the deeds of such brew”

kAkka poruLA aDakkaththai Akkam

kAkka - preserve
poruLA  - as a stable precious wealth to preserve
aDakkaththai – the virtue of composure, self-control
Akkam – wealth
Adhanin – than that
Unggillai - none better
Uyirkku – for all humanbeings.

Reading through vaLLuvar’s work we can see this typical style of presentation of the subject matter in different perspectives. Usually he gives a general idea on the subject first and expands it by, a warning of not having or following a certain virtue, subtle reminders, persuations, highlighting a cause-effect scenario, incentives etc,.

In that line of thought, after warning about not having the virtue of composure, self-control, here he says that human beings must hold on to the virtue of composure and self-control (implying not to be vainglorious and self important) as there is no better wealth that one can possess than that.

Since none better wealth than composure,
Ye people! Hold that as precious treasure

(Self Control, Composure)

Transliteration:
aDakkam amararuL uykkum aDangAmai
AriruL uyththu vidum

aDakkam – composure or self-control (for anyone)
amararuL –  to the Gods
uykkum  - will take
aDangAmaiyAr – Not having that or lack of it
iruL – in darkness, the hell
uyththu vidum – will deliver us

The word “Ar” in the 2nd line of the verse has the meaning of several exalated things such as completeness, exquisite and something very subtle and also means Lord Shiva.  Hece the meaning of AriruL as given by commentators does not seem to fit the context at all. It has been used in the sense of, “treacherous”, “hard to come out of” – very negative and unpleasant , to highlight the darkness in the context of not having self-control or composure.

Just like the word “aDakkam” denotes the people of composure, “aDangAmaiyAr” would mean, “not having composure”. Just for the poetical meter to be correct the ending connector “Ar” has been moved to the first word of next line in this verse.

Now to the meaning of the verse - The word self-control implies the control of five senses and having composure and equanimity in life.  This virtue comes only with completeness of learning and deep knowledge of right and wrong, to maintain a calmness and righteousness with composure. By having this virtue, one will be placed among the heavenly beings. The verse also means that after one sheds the mortal coil, the glory and fame they leave behind will stay for ever. Similarly, those who don’t have that virtue will be in the darkness of ignorance and accordingly suffer in their lives.

In the works of “aRaneRichAram”, the poet “MunippAdiyAr” says that the friendship of one who treads the path of truth and livies by that virtue, gives the blessing of “self-control” in the birth and will place them in heavens after their life one earth.

“Self-control, composure will place among the glorious heavens
Not having the same will place in the darkness of desolation “

vAnigam  - Business
seivArkku – those who’re doing (business)
vANigam -  their business
pENip – must be done sincerely and fairly
piRavum  - Treating others
thamapOl - as also people that earn through hard means
seyin – If they conduct the business

Sangam literature PattinappAlai says thus: “naDuvu nindRA nannenjinOr vaDuvanji vAimozhindhu thamavum piRavu moppa nADik kOLvadhUum migai koLAdhu, koDuppadhUum kuRai koDadhu palpanDam pagarndhu vIsum tholkondith thuvandRiukkai”.

It means that just business persons, never accept more than what’s due to them either with their customers (in terms of money), or with people that they do business with. They never succumb to avarice because it is somebody’s goods or money. Same way, whatever they have to give to their customers or to other business people as a barter or money, they will not give less than what’s due also.

This verse says, those who are in business, must be fair, just and impartial in their business dealings with other business people as well as their customers and protect the interests of customers or other business people as their own.

“Business persons must do fair and just business, protect
Their business customers’ interest as their own, the best.”

Transliteration:
soRkOTTam illadhu seppam oruthalaiyA
uTkOTTam inmai peRin

soRkOTTam  - insincere, disingenuous, devious words
illadhu – not having such words
seppam – is being impartial and just
oruthalaiyA- that too, if not onesided
uTkOTTam – in the hearts while uttering such words (just to show off as just and impartial)
inmai peRin – if not so (then the person is truly just and impartial)

Sooth saying with sweetness while keeping ill in the hearts is not good for any one. Kinship with such people should be severed, cut off, as Saint Ramalinga Adigal would say, “uLLondRu vaiththu puRamondRu pEsuvAr uRavu kalavAmai vENDum”.  There are many people that have a façade of impartiality but inside with extreme bias due to self benefit.

Being impartial is not only not bending in words spoken by taking sides but not having bias of preference in the hearts too.

It is interesting, how vaLLuvar sets a connection for this verse later in the chapter of “Wisdom” with the verse “eppOruL yAr yAr vAi kETpinum appOruL meipporuL kaNbhadharivu”.  Though it is said in the context of people that render justice in general, the wisdom needs to be applied in this context also as we need to examine the words for their propriety as well as the person’s true leanings.

I have written two verses in Tamil, both essentially meaning the same, since the word “kODal” means, not bending, twisting, changing, becoming crooked etc, - To mean what the gist of the verse is as well as using the word meaning of the word “kODAL”.

Not bending in words said, is fair and just – that too
If it is practiced in the heart sincerely for it to be true.

Transliteration:
Samanseidhu sIrthUkkung kOlpOl amaindhorupAl
kODAmai sAndRork kaNi

Samanseidhu  - balancing either side
sIrthUkkung  -  say which side has more weight or less weight (used as a metaphor for justice)
kOlpOl  - like a of  weighing scale
amaindh(u) – being in the state of ( a balancing scale)
orupAl – on oneside
kODAmai – biased and taking sides (because of partiality of already biased state)
sAndRork(ku) – those who’re learned and stand by the virtuous ways
aNi – is like the best garland for them.

A balancing scale, only when not biased by design, can weigh the things kept on either side of it flawlessly. Similarly, only when people that render justice are unbiased not taking into consideration anything else except the essence of the case before them, the justice is done rather than appeared to be done. Considerations such as the societal status, money or favors returned later on etc., from either side, should never swerve the learned from being just and impartial.

If a balance scale is proper, it does not see if the salt or sugar is kept on either side. It does not take the side of sweet or salt depending on which taste it likes. Such should be the demeanor and caliber of people of justice and learned.

In this verse, the commentator ParimElazhagar points out that the metaphorical context of balancing, identifying which side has truth on its side  are said in the context of objects that are balanced, while the physical and object oriented aspects of the balancing scale such as onsidedness, not being faulty are said in the context of justice and impartiality.

The example of balance scale is used in many old literature as “therikOl”, “neRkOl” and “njaman” etc. Sangam anthology such as Kaliththogai, PuranAnURu, and MaduraikkAnchi etc. have poems that use these words in a similar context.

“Like a balancing scale that weighs unbiased
Impartial and not leaning decorate the learned”
