செறிவறிந்து சீர்மை பயக்கும் அறிவறிந்து

ஆற்றின் அடங்கப் பெறின்.

                         (குறள் 123: அடக்கமுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

seRivaRindhu – gaining awareness of virtue and fulfillment (and attaining because of that)

sIrmai  - highlighted glory

payakkum – will give

aRivaRindhu – if with sense attained by knowledge

AtRin – deeds are done

aDangap  - and that too with a lot of self-discipline, composure, humble, control, (not vainglorious or arrogant)

peRin – if be that way

Driven by the knowledge, are the virtuous ways. While deeds are virtuous, not being boastful about them, being humble and self restrained are greater traits that will yield glory to such practitioners. There are people that are superficially humble, yet overtly or covertly displaying the glory of their greatness and the farce of their humility. True glory is people of greater knowledge, with simple minds, unannounced humility and self-restrained demeanor.

Once again from aRanericharam, a verse which says that there is none the person who is humble, self-restrained, keeping only his heart as the witness to the deeds done, will not gain.

There are two verses written for today’s verse. The firstone focuses on the virtue of self-control, self-restraint and the second one focuses on the person of the same.

“Humility gained by the knowledge of virtue

  Bestows glory for the deeds of such brew”

செறிவறிந்து – நெறியின் நிறைவென்ன என்பதை அறிந்து (அடைந்து)

சீர்மை - மேன்மையை

பயக்கும் - தரும்

அறிவறிந்து – அறிவின்கண் விளையும் நெறியுடன்

ஆற்றின் – செயல்களைச் செய்து

அடங்கப் – பின்னும் தன்னடகத்துடன்

பெறின் – இருக்கப் பெற்றால்

அறிவின்வழி விளையும் நெறியுடன் செயல்களைச் செய்தலும், அவ்வாறு செய்யும் போது தன்னடக்கத்துடனும் இருந்தால், நெறிபட வாழலின் நிறைவையும், மேன்மையையும் பெறலாம். அறிவுடமையை விளம்பரப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளும் ஆரவாரத்தன்மையுள்ளவர்களும் உள்ளனர். ஆனால் அவ்வாறிருந்தும் அடக்கமுடையராருக்கே சிறப்பு, பெருமையெல்லாம்.

மறுபடியும் நன்னெறிச்சாரத்திலிருந்து இரண்டுவரிகள் அடக்கமுடமைபற்றி:

தன்னைத் தன் நெஞ்சம் கரி ஆகத் தான் அடங்கின் 
பின்னைத் தான் எய்தா நலன் இல்  (கரி – சாட்சி)

தன்னுடைய மனமே தன்னுடைய செயல்களுக்கு சாட்சியாகக் கொண்டு, தன்னடகத்துடன் இருக்கும் ஒருவரால் அடையமுடியாத நலன்கள் பின்னர் ஏதுமில்லை. இன்றும் இரு குறள்கள். ஒன்று அறிவுடமை என்பது, அறிவதோடு, அடக்கம் கொண்டிருத்தலென்றும், அவ்வுண்மை அறிந்தோருக்கு மேன்மையென்றும் கூறுவது. மற்றொன்று தன்னறிவினால் அறிவின் பயன் நெறிபட வாழ்தல், அதிலும் வீண்பெருமை கொள்ளாது தன்னடக்கத்துடன் வாழ்தல், அதனால் மேன்மை என்ற பொருளிலும் கூறப்பட்டது.

செறிவுடன் மேன்மை தரும்
