Transliteration:
dhAnam thavam iraNDum thangA viyan ulagam
vAnam vazhangAdhenin

dhAnam  - charity
thavam - penance
iraNDum = the two (are like two eyes in everyones life)
thangA  - won’t last in this world
viyan  ulagam – in this vast world
vAnam – skies (clouds)
vazhangAdhenin – dry up and won’t give its seasonal pours.

In the last verse, vaLLuvar mentioned about absence of celebrations and offerings to Gods by people of the world. In this verse, he talks about the two important duties of everyone born in this world. Charity is taking care of people that don’t have by people of plenty. It can be in kind or by deeds. It is an essential ingredient of human goodness, value system – an act of kindness without expecting anything in return.

Skies bless us with their charity by showering their seasonal pours, not expecting anything in return. So, they serve as an example to people of this world to do and show how, that charity creates an all around happiness to every living soul of the world. So, if the chairity becomes a rarity or even stop for any reason, the very model code of charity is not there for us to follow!

Penance is simply not going away to a far off forest and sitting in a place, closing eyes, and praying to God for some personal selfish goals. Our mythology has ample evidences in demonic characters that have sought boons to create menace and finally perish because of their own ill-deeds. Penance is just being focused and to pray Godhead for the goodness to prevail on this earth. Great souls have done exactly that and their prayers include “sarvE janAh sukhino bhavantu” (எல்லோரும் இன்புற்றிருக்க வேண்டுவதன்றி யாமொன்றும் அறியோம் பராபரமே). As a popular saying goes, even if there is a single great good soul there on this earth, everyone will have the benefits of rains because of them.

Again there is an implied warning, to all of us that these important two virtues will perish if rains fail us. Whose lose can it be? Subtle insistence of following the virtuous path for these interlinked things to happen without interruption.

“World will witness charity and penance perish
Should giving of the skies be a rarity or just finish”

siRappoDu pUsanai sellAdhu vAnam
vaRakkumEl vAnOrkkum INDu

siRappoDu – With all the glory  and celebrations
pUsanai  - Offerings & prayers (to Gods)
sellAdhu – won’t happen
vAnam – the Clouds in the skies
vaRakkumEl  - dry up and won’t rain
vAnOrkkum  - to the Gods who are celestial beings
INDu – Here (on this earth)

Typical interpretation of this verse has been thus: If the clouds on the skies dry up and won’t rain, the consequent prosperity, happiness for the people on earth will not be there to have any celebrations or offerings, for celestial Gods.

Do they really care for all the celebrations on earth or even offerings for them? Once again, Godhead is a superior form devoid of any likes or dislikes. So, to think that it really matters to them is sheer lack of understanding of the very form.

At the fact level, yes, when we don’t have happiness in our minds, and we feel so enervated to do anything exciting when we have no rains for seasons together. Rains bring prosperity to the human kind as evidenced by the things that happen because of rains, as mentioned in the previous verses.

In our theology, apart from Gods, we always worship our ancestors that have passed away, and believe their spirits continue live with us, guiding us always and in fond memory, do our annual offerings to them. This in a way is our thanks giving to our ancestors for all the experiences and prosperity they cultivated and left with us. It is truly sad, if we can not do these offerings and celebrations, on a regular basis because of our unhappiness and lack of prosperity due to failed/diminished rains.

If it were to simply be the offerings to celestial Gods, vaLLuvar would not have taken pains to dedicate a kuraL, which he has done in ample measure in other verses for valid reason.

“No Celebrations and offerings possible for celestials
When the skies dry up and put earth in ordeal.

nedunkaDalum thannIrmai kundRum thaDindhezhili
thAn nalgAdhAgi vidin

nedunkaDalum – the wide sea
thannIrmai  - its wealth of water
kundRum – will wane, depreciate, diminish, dwindle
thaDindhu – ezhili – thunderbolts- clouds (clouds with thunderbolts)
thAn  - it self
nalgAdh(u) Agi vidin – fails to gift or give

vaLLuvar understands the eco blance of the world so well, the importance of seas and the sea-borne wealth for the world. He makes an observation that if the clouds with thunderbolts don’t give their seasonal endowments, even the sea with vast waterbody and its hidden wealth will diminish and drain (eventually).

There is no system in the universe that has endless supply gifts without being replenished routinely. There is Tamil adage that comes to mind. ‘kundhith thindRAl, kunDrum kundRum’ (குந்தித் தின்றால் குன்றும் குன்றும்), meaning, if we keep draining a source, without working to get the source replenished, even a mountainous amount of wealth  will diminish and vanish.

Though the verse is written to stress the importance of rains, it also highlights the importance our working for survival, and implies that nothing can sustain without a source of income, including what seems an eternal source of supply.

Reading through the chapter on glory of rains, we can not miss the hidden insistence on the virtue based life for all of us. It is simply not the glory of the rains that seems to be talked about. It is a hidden awareness to make sure that rains continue to pour to sustain life on earth. In a ways, there is an implied chain reaction here. There is a Tamil verse which says thus:

"vEdam Odhiya vEthiyarkku Or mazhai,
nIthi mannar neriyinArkku Or mazhai,
mAthar karpudai mangayarkku Or mazhai
ena mAtham mummAri mazhai peyumE"

So, for orderly functioning of forces of nature also, life on earth should tread the virtuous path.

AngE – there (in the world)
pasumpul – the young green grass (it is said in the tone of “not even grass)
thalai – sprout
kANbaridhu – rare to see

In this verse, vaLLuvar declares that without the rain drops (many a drops make a mega flood) even the lowest form of living form, a grass (the lowest of life form with only one sense) will not sprout on this earth. There is a common thought in Manikkavasagar’s Sivapuranam, where he says, “pullAgi, poodAi puzhuvAi maramAgi and gives the order of life forms in the increasing number of senses or functional utility.

The implied meaning is that when it is difficult even to see the one-sensed grass to sprout without the rains from skies (clouds), it is not possible for other forms of life to blossom and thrive without rain.

“If no droplets of the clouds fall on this earth
Even the tiny grass buds won’t have their birth”

Transliteration:
keDuppadhu-um keTTArkku sArvAi  maTRAngE
eDuppadhu-um ellAm mazhai
keDuppadhu-um – Ruining the lives of people (that depend on rains)
keTTArkku – to the ruined people
sArvAi maTRu  - in support of them (ruined people)
AngE - there
eDuppadhu-um – Lifts them up (by pouring sufficiently)
ellAm – everything is
mazhai – rains.

The tone of this verse seems general and is applicable to every living being of the world, but more so to the farmers of the world if we see in the context of adjacency to the previous verse.

vaLLuvar now attributes some kind of free will and thinking capacity to rains as if they act on their own will. Rains can completely deceive the rain seeking world without its seasonal bounty, and can also in support of the same, pour in abundance to help the rain seeking world to uplift the people affected by its failing them.

Reputed Parimelazhagar, one of the early commentators of kuraL, explicity says that this verse talks about the ability and capacity of rains to act on its own. It could simply a poetic imagination and figure of speech in his verse.

Though the word “eduppadu-um” (எடுப்பதூஉம்) rhymes with “keduppadhu-um” (கெடுப்பதூஉம்), I was thinking vaLLuvar could have used “koduppadhu-um” (கொடுப்பதூஉம்) meaning it can also “give”. A little more looking into vaLLuvar’s mind, it became obvious that the word “eduppadu-um” fits in nicely to mean, “up-lifting”. It makes only sense to uplift somebody who has been affected by the voluntary or involuntary action of a person, thus according an all powerful status to rains, especially with the usage of the word “ellAm” (எல்லாம்) which implies that.

This verse also confirms, in a very subtle way, the belief of vaLLuvar in the power of nature to govern the world by attributing an all powerful status to “rains”, elevating it to some sort of Godhood.

“Not giving its plenty, rain can set the world in ruins,
Yet, all powerful to lift the same by its bountiful rains”

Transliteration:
eRin uzhAar uzhavar puyal ennum
vAri vaLankundrik kAl

eRin – with the plough (tilling implement for turning the soil)
uzhAar – won’t plough or till the soil
uzhavar- the ploughmen, farmers
puyal ennum – pregnant clouds that can pour to sumptuous rains
vAri - water
vALamkundrikkAl – if it is diminished in its wealth (of water content)

The farmers will not be able to till and farm the land to grow grains, vegetables and fruits if the clouds that gives water for the farmers, diminish in their wealth of water carried in them. Here is another verse which stresses the importance of rains from the perspective of farmers around the world.

Through this chapter, vaLLuvar tries to bring forth the importance of rains from different perspectives. In the first verse he generally likened the water to nectar of life. In the second verse, he detailed the importance of water for creating and sustaining the food chain including it self being a food. In the third verse, he portrayed a scenario of hunger as a fire engulfing the world if the water creating rains fail the world. Now the fourth verse talks about the rain again from the perspective of farmers and the ploughmen and says if the sumptuous rains don’t fall, there won’t be any work for farmers indicating the source of food chain will be affected.

The word “vAri”, though has two meanings – “income”, “water”; he has used it cleverly to imply both in one word. The research commentary by kI.vA.jA also points out another kuraL (512) where “vAri” has been used as an “income”.  It makes sense to think of “vAri” - water as an income to the world. In the economic sense, it becomes an investment for the farmers to farm for their gains. The connotation is that if the investment diminishes, production also reduces and hence the diminished economic prosperity.

The word “puyal” does not mean calamity-causing hurricane or how it has come to be understool in the language now. It implies the preganant clouds that are bountiful in the wealth of water they carry to give us good rains.

“ Farmers cease to plough and till the land to farm
When the clouds not profuse in their wealth norm”

Trasliteration:

viNindRu poippin virinIr viyanulagath
thuNind RudatRum pasi

viNindRu – If the rains from skies dry up (should be read as viN indri)
poippin – if it fails to rain in proper seasons
virinIr – surrounded by water of vast oceans
viyan ulagath(u) – this glorious word
thuNind(Ru) – Should be read as “uL nindRu”, meaning will come to stay (what? – hunger)
udatRum – one which causes troubles painfully (which – hunger)
pasi - hunger

The theme continues and follows the previous verse where vaLLuvar said the world lives because of rains. In this verse he says, if the rains fail us without their seasonal pours, all the living beings of the world will starve to death because of the fire of hunger.

The description of “viri nIr viyan ulagam” is not just added as decorative meter filler, but to indicate the expanse of the world surrounded by the oceans. It indeed suggests that, though the big oceans surround this glorious world, salty water is of no use for any vegetation or worthy of drinking. Both adjectives of “viri nIr” (vast waterbody of oceans) , and “viyan ulagam” (glorious world)  have no value or meaning if the rains fail us, is the subtle suggestion made by.

He does not explicity say the consequences, but hints at them. He simply says if the rains fail, hunger will come to stay and trouble the world”.

"Failing rains in the world surrounded by vast waters
Wreaks the fire of hunger on its subjects that shatters"

Transliteration:
thuppArkku thuppAya thuppAkki thuppArkkuth
thuppAya thUm mazhai

thuppArkku – For people to eat food
thupp(u) Aya – Good in nature (nourishment, taste etc.)
thupp(u) Akki – helping in the growth of vegetation on this earth to create food of all living beings on this earth
thuppArkkuth – for people that eat
thupp(u) AyathUm -  itself becoming a food (water that we drink is due to rains)
mazhai – rains.

In this interesting verse of vaLLuvar, there is a clever usage of word “thuppu” (துப்பு), in all the words except the last one, stemming from the root word “thuppu” meaning food. This is one of the most popular kuRaL among thamizh public speakers, mostly for it rhythmic and fascinating construction. From the effectiveness point of view, it does not score much IMHO. The words “thuppArkku” and “thuppAya” have been used twice, with the same meaning also.

Could he have used a more common known “uN” (உண்) root to construct the poem to make it readily understandable? Reading through the period-poems of Sangam, this word does not seem to have been used much either. A poet’s responsibility is to convey the thought more than being smart in the construction of poems, especially if it was intended for common folks. Anyways, I am not second guessing vaLLuvar’s intent or thought process when he wrote what he wrote.

This verse speaks about the glory of rains. Rains make the vegetation on this earth possible that gives us grains, vegetables, and fruits and the even the air we breath in an indirect way. Without rains how can plants grow and breathe CO2 and give us oxygen. If we have to treat oxygen as some sort of food for our body, then rains are the reasons for that too.  Also, water that is created out rains, itself becomes a food for every living being on this earth.

“Rains make the food good for everyone to eat
While it self becoming a food and life’s treat.

vAn ninRu ulagam vazhangi varudhalAl
than amizhdham endRuNar pAtRu.

vAn ninRu – the sky that gives us the rains without failing the seasons
ulagam – this world
vazhangi varudhalAl -  gives as a gift (without failing)
than  - it is (the sky)
amizhdham – nectar that gives the boon to live for ever (because of rains the world lives and continues on, else it will dry and perish eventually)
endRuNar – To realize
 pAtRu. -  worthy of (realizing)

“World continues life with the unfailing rains from the sky
Beware without that ambrosia the same would dry and die”

In this self-centric, self-serving world, people that think of the help done by someone without expecting anything in return are a rare breed, but vaLLuvar lived by what he believed in and preached to the world. As we will see later in a different chapter of “nandRi aRidhal”, he truly lived by what he wrote, “ennandRi kondrArkkum uyvunDAm uyvillai sei nandRi kondRa magarkkU”. To dedicate the whole chapter to praise the sky that rains for us to live in this World, a thought, which has not crossed any other poet in any other culture, shows him in great light.

Now he moves from the invisible to visible, abstract unseen to concrete seen, from the Godhead to his construed kind act or gift for the world. The whole chapter of “vAn siRappu” (வான் சிறப்பு) is gravitating on the the gift of rain from the clouds, the importance of water for the survival this world. As we see the world moving towards commoditizing the nature’s gifts one by one, we need to start thinking of how humanity can survive by depeleting the resources one by one at this speed.. The dooms day predictions, if not in 2012, will become true one day not far in the future, if the collective will of humanity does not move towards a self-replenishing, balanced eco-system revival. Today, it is water, and tomorrow it may be the air we breath!

In this verse, vaLLuvar states that we need to realize that the world is continuing its life without perishing because the ambrosial rains, skies pour during the right seasons, without fail. Since the world is immortalized and the life on earth is sustained because of rains it is likened to ambrosia, nectar that makes a person live forever.
