Transliteration:
kAkkai karavA karainduNNum Akkamum
annanI rArkkE uLa

kAkkai – a crow
karavA – will not hide (the food it picks up)
karainduNNum – will call out its kindred
Akkamum – the wealth such as money, devoid of enemies, good relations, glory, etc.
anna nIrArkkE – Only to people of such trait
uLa – will be there.

A crow is not a desirable birl; it is black and not colorful or attractive like other birds. Does go as uninvited guest where the food is found and without anyone’s consent picks up food. Mostly people only drive off the bird when they sight the bird. But such generally despised bird has a unique character. It always shares the food it gets with its kindre, calling them out when it finds and picks up the food. Such a sharing tendency is not found in most humans and in other life forms. Whether it is true for a crow for being such a benevolent bird to get all prosperity or not, this verse says, for people of such benevolence prosperity of all kinds will be there.

“Crow cries out to its kindred to share the food it finds without concealing
Nature of such sharing bequeath to a person prosperity without ceiling “

Transliteration:
perungkuDaiyAn pENAn veguLi avanin
marunguDaiyAr mAnilaththu il
perungkuDaiyAn – one who is benevolent
pENAn veguLi – and does not succumb  to anger, rage
avanin – none other than him
marunguDaiyAr – is surrounded by
mAnilaththu il – in this world

This verse expresses the same thought as the previous, except said in a different way. The last verse stressed on being a person of sweet words to kindred. This verse talks about not giving in to anger or rage apart from being benevolent. In general people of sweet words will be devoid of anger and likewise, people devoid of anger will be of sweet words. Why then are there two verses? Sometimes people can pretend to be sweet tongued; but to pretend consistently as a person devoid of anger or rage is extremely impossible. Perhaps because of that vaLLuvar has said about both in two different verses.

The verse says: None other than the benevolent and anger/rage restrained, is surrounded by kindred in this world.

None other than benevolent and anger restrained
Is most desired to be surrounded by dear kindred

Transliteration:

koDuththalum insolum ARRin aDukkiya
suRRaththAl suRRap paDum

koDuththalum – with wealth, being always a support
insolum – and a person of sweet words
ARRin – and do so
aDukkiya –  direct and indirect
suRRaththAl – by kindred
suRRappaDum – be surrounded

Once again a verse with an obvious fact that almost everyone knows either as a pleasant or bitter truth as per their persoanl experiences. It definitely feels like a count filling verse for this chapter. But the specific word usage of “aDukkiya” is rather important in this verse. This is also an observed fact, but endorses that this has been seen and experienced for thousands of years. When the wealthy and affluent or people that wield power can not only support, but be sweet in words to the direct kith and kin as well as the indirect army of kindred, then they will be surrounded by such a battalion of kindred always, though said in the pleasant context, coud be bitter sweet sometimes!

Infact, a nAlaDiyAr verse says it much more effectively, though a little expensive by two more lines.  The verse says: ‘When a person is of sweet words that do not differentiate others by branding in certain ways like, “my perception of this person is this, this person is my relative or the person is not directly ours”, and can remove the pains of poor kindred, they are the most qualified to lead”. These words throw more light into this subject and also support once again the golden words, of AuvayyAr. “selvarkkazhagu sezhunkilAi thAngudal’

“When not differentiating the people as close or distant kindred
a person of sweet words and benevolence is always surrounded”

Transliteration:

suRRathtAl suRRap paDaozhugal selvandAn
peRRaththAl peRRa payan

suRRathtAl – with the associates
suRRappaDa ozhugal – living a life, surrounded by them, their support
selvam – is the real wealth
tAn peRRaththAl – for some one, because of greatness
peRRa payan – what that person gets.

The word order of this verse cause considerable confusion to interpret in a meaningful way, Parimelazhagar and hence others after him or that followed him also have interpreted based on what they make of the word “peRRaththAl” as “peRRa adanAl”, meaning “because of getting that”. It is very unlikely that vaLLuvar has meant so, as he certainly was not devoid of words to play with to get the intended meaning more effectively.

Because of the construed word meaning, the verse has been interpretd thus: “The very purpose and use of somebody begetting wealth is to live surrounded by the close associates”. Without any base, this would mean that it is right to have many people live off a rich person. It is very clear that was not the intended meaning. The word “peRRam” means “greatness”.

The verse with the correct  interpretation of the words, directly means this: “To live and be loved surrounded by close associates is itself wealth for someone. The greatness attained by the person also has a meaning and purpose when such is the case”.

Two verses from nAlaDiyAr and aRaneRichchAram express similar thoughts. nAladiyar verse says, just like a tree giving shade when the hot sun is burning, taking all the heat on itself, a great human being is the one who lives for others to live happily despite his own personal suffering. aRaneRichchAram verse says, rich must quell anger, be good, must support all that are associated with them, must share food with them, muts be charitable. Such good souls will live among the heavenly beings.  Auvayaar has said it in one sentence, “selvark kazhagu sezhunkiLai thAngudal” - a profound expression.

“True wealth is to live surrounded by kindred
Also the purpose, use of greatness obtained”
