Transliteration:
Avisorindh dhAyiram vETTalin onRan
Uyirseguth thuNNAmai nanRu

Avisorindh(u)  - Better than droping oblations to the sacrificial fire
Ayiram – (and doing) a thousand
vETTalin - sacrifices
onRan – A life’s
Uyirseguthth(u) – killing it (life) for meat and
uNNAmai – not eating
nanRu – is good

Purposeless offerings in terms of ghee and other material things in a sacrificial fire and do such sacrifices, thousands of them is of no use compared to not eating meat by killing another life, however inferior tha life is. That’s the only way and high path to reach Godhead – A simple thought espoused in this verse.

Parimelazhagar in his commentary says that the usage of Sacrificial fire is bigger than ordinary resolve to not kill other life forms to eat meat. Suggests that by doing the smaller thing there is an easy way to salvation.

“More than of thousands of oblations in sacrificial fire
Better not to eat meat by killing a life, a sinful desire”

Transliteration:
seyirin thalaipirindha kATchiyAr uNNAr
uyirin thalaipirindha Un

seyirin - blemish
thalaipirindha – removed
kATchiyAr –knowledgeable person
uNNAr – will not eat
uyirin – a life
thalaipirindha – removed (by killing)
Un – meat.

The word “seyirin” used in this verse means “flawless sharp intellect” as per ParimElazhagar.  ParidhiyAr has meant this to be “unclean” and KALingar as “sin”. Regardless of how we take it, they all point to deficiency of human in some form or other. The verse says: The persons of sharp and blemish free intellect will not kill another life to eat that. It is like eating the corpse.

vaLLuvar has given two important subtle points here. First, he kindles the ego of a person and says only people of flawful intellect will eat by killing. Secondly, he creates disgust by saying; it is equivalent to eating a corpse. We can see his keenness to avert people from eating meat by saying the evil of meat eating in many ways.

But we have several counters for such forceful arguments. When I was writing the alternate verse for this, and sharing it with my mother, she said, “pasi vandhiDa paththum paRandhu pOm”. (When hunger strikes, all the ten will fly away) and people will not even think about good or bad. What are these ten things that will leave a person to let him go to such a lowly state? Self-respect, good family, education, helping others, intellect,  benovelence, stature, good occupation, effort, and even love towards good woman partner, are these ten aspects of a persons life that he should not lose.  Truly, if these things leave a person, would eating meat is going to be viewed a sin by such persons? Thought to ponder.

“Persons of flawless and sharp intellect
Will not kill a life to eat the corpse of that”

Transliteration:
uNNAmai vENDum pulAal piRithonRan
puNNadhu uNarvArp peRin

uNNAmai vENDum – Should not eat
pulAal - meat
piRithonRan puNNadhu – After all it is like a wound on a body (disgusting)
uNarvArp peRin – if that’s realized

In this verse, vaLLuvar depicts meat eating as a digusting act by comparing to a disgusting thought. One must definitely avoid eating meat if they realize how disgusting it is as it tatamount to eating a raw wound on a body. It gives as much disgust. To say it in the strongest possible terms, and to make a lasting impression of disgust about meat eating, he has used a truly disgusting act.

The moment one hears the word “pulAl”, a raw wound should appear in our vision and imagination of eating that wound should come to mind. That will set the utmost disgust in us about eating meat.

Some people advocate killing for eating as nature’s law and argue that it has been so designed by the omniscient God. They cite examples of small fish eaten by big fishes, and weaker animals killed for food by bigger animals and say it is the food cycle design of God, justifying the act of killing for food. They would also ask, after all humans did not know agriculture until they evolved and they were only eating meat for a long time. Yes, vegetarianism may be a later thought; but as part of evolving, dressless man became eventually fashionable to wear dresses. After all, as the world formed and became the breeding ground for different life forms, before humans evoled either due to Darwinian theory or in other ways, there were fruit bearing trees and other forms of vegetation.  Strong and big elephants and milk giving cows have stayed vegetarian instinctly by birth. So to advocate killing citing what is convenient to them is futile.  This verse  is one of the best forceful verses of vaLLuvar to condemn the meat eating practice, invoking disgust in people.

“One must not eat meat if only they understand
It is as disgusting as eating the sickeing wound”

vilaiporuTTAl UnRaruva ril

thinaRporuTTAl – for the purpose of eating (meat)
kollAdhu – not killing
ulagenin – if the world is (not killing)
yArum – none will
vilaiporuTTAl – for the sake of selling
UnRaruvar – Un+tharuvAr – people that sell meat
Il - none

Some poets write very obvious observations as poems – something like “sun is bright”. This verse is something silmilar in nature. You will also probably agree when you read the meaning of this verse.

If no one kills for food other life forms in this world, then there won’t be people that sell meat for others to buy and consume. Even if they don’t kill people that are agents for others to eat meat and those that eat meat will only go to hell after they leave this world. So by not killing for food, both the agents of meat eating (sellers) and meat eaters (consumers) are save from going to hell is implied here.

“If none to kill for eating meat in the world
None there to sell or consume meat as food”
