காதலர் இல்வழி மாலை கொலைக்களத்து

ஏதிலர் போல வரும்.

                           (குறள் 1224: பொழுது கண்டிரங்கல் அதிகாரம்)

காதலர் இல்வழி - காதலர் பிரிந்திருக்கும்போது

மாலை - வருகிற மாலைப் பொழுது

கொலைக்களத்து - கொலை செய்யும் இடத்தே

ஏதிலர் போல வரும் - கொலைஞரைப் போல வரும்

காதலர் என்னுடன் இருந்தபோதெல்லாம் வாழ்வளிக்க வந்த மாலைப் பொழுது, இப்போது அவர் என்னுடன் இல்லாத நேரத்தில், கொலைகளத்தில் வாளேந்தி கொல்ல வருகிற கொலைஞரைப் போல் வருகிறது. காதலன் பிரிவாற்றாமையில் இருக்கும்போது, அவனுடன் முயங்கிக் கிடந்த மாலை நேரம் வந்து, அவனைப் பற்றிய நினைவுகளைத் தூண்டி அவளைத் துன்புறுத்துவதை இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறாள் காதற் தலைவி.

Transliteration:

kAdalar ilvazhi mAlai kolaikaLattu

Edilar pOla varum

kAdalar ilvazhi – when the lovers are away from each other,

mAlai – the evenings

kolaikaLattu – (feel like ) how in the slaughter place

Edilar pOla varum - the executioner comes to kill

When my beloved was with me, the evenings were lively and gave me life; Now that he is away, the evenings feel like how slayers come to the slaughterhouse to kill, says the maiden. Every evening, during his absence makes her feel like a killing slayer, approaching her.

“The evenings that come when my lover has gone away

 are like slayer coming to slaughter place, to take life away”
