காமக் கடும்புனல் உய்க்கும் நாணொடு

நல்லாண்மை என்னும் புணை.

                        (குறள் 1134: நாணுத்துறவுரைத்தல் அதிகாரம்)

காமக் கடும்புனல் - காட்டாற்று வெள்ளம்போன்ற காமம்

உய்க்கும் - தம்மோடு அடித்துச்சென்று அழித்துவிடும் (எவற்றை?)

நாணொடு - இழிமைக்கு வெட்குதல்

நல்லாண்மை - நல்ல ஆண்மைத்தன்மை

என்னும் புணை - என்று சொல்லக்கூடிய கடக்கவுதவும் தோணிகளைக் கூட

இழுக்கதற்கு வெட்கும் பண்பையும், ஆண்மைத் தன்மையையுமாகிய காக்கின்ற தோணிகளையும் காட்டாற்று வெள்ளமனைய காமம் அடித்து செல்லக்கூடியது என்று கூறி, காமத்தின் வலிமையை உணர்த்தும் மற்றொரு குறள் இது. பொங்கும் கடலிலும் தேர்ச்சி மிகுந்த ஓடம் செலுத்துபவராக இருக்கும் சிலர், தீடீரென்று பொங்கிவரும் காட்டாற்று வெள்ளத்தில் தங்கள் தோணியோடு அடித்துச் செல்லப்படுவதுண்டு. அதனால் இக்குணங்களை கடக்கும் தோணியாகக் கொண்டு, காமத்தின் வீச்சினைக் குறைத்து மதிப்பிட வேண்டாம் என்று எச்சரிக்கும் விதமாக உள்ளது  இக்குறள்.

"சான்றவிர் வாழியோ" என்னும் நெய்தற் கலியுள்

காணுநர் எள்ளக் கலங்கித் தலைவந்துஎன்

ஆணெழில் முற்றி உடைத்துள் அழித்தரும்

மாண்இழை மாதராள் ஏஎர்எனக் காமனது

ஆணையால் வந்தபடை” என்று கலித்தொகைப் பாடலொன்று காமத்தால் ஆணெழில் முற்றி உடைத்துள் அழிதருவதைக் கூறுகிறது, இக்குறள் கருத்தையொட்டி.

Transliteration:

kAmak kaDumpunal uikkum nANoDu

nallAnmai ennum puNai

kAmak kaDumpunal – Like the strong currents of floods

uikkum –shall destroy (what?)

nANoDu – being shameful for demeaning

nallAnmai – and manliness

ennum puNai – that are like raft.

The raft that is a mans savior manliness and the sense of shame for demeaning acts, will be swept away by the sudden floods of lust, says this verse, alluding to the strong force that lust is. However capable a boat man is even to steer in the middle of roaring ocean, he might be swept by the unexpected currents of flash floods; so a man shall not underestimate the nature of lust. Again, a verse that suggests how strong the force of lust is and how it will even let a man forego his pride and modesty.

“The flash flood that lust is, shall make a man forego

 both the sense of shame and the manliness in a row!”
