நாணொடு நல்லாண்மை பண்டுடையேன் இன்றுடையேன்

காமுற்றார் ஏறும் மடல்.

                        (குறள் 1133: நாணுத்துறவுரைத்தல் அதிகாரம்)

நாணொடு - இழிமைக்கு வெட்குதலும்

நல்லாண்மை - தளரா உறுதியோடு கூடிய ஆண்மையும்

பண்டுடையேன் - தொன்று தொட்டு இன்றுவரை கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்

இன்றுடையேன் - இன்று கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்

காமுற்றார் - காமம் கொண்டு இவற்றைத் துறப்போர்

ஏறும் மடல் - ஏறுகின்ற மடலூர்தலை

இழிமைக்கு வெட்குதலும், தளரா உறுதியோடு இருக்கக்கூடிய ஆண்மையும் என்னோடு தொன்று தொட்டு, எங்கள் குலச் சொத்தாகக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். ஆனால் இன்றோ என்காதலிமேல் கொண்ட வேட்கைக் காரணமாக, காமநோய் உற்ற ஆண்களைப் போன்று பனை மடல் ஏறவும் செய்கிறேன் என்று ஆண்மகன் தன்னுடைய எப்போதுள்ள ஒழுக்கக் கூற்றினையும், இப்போது தற்காலிகமாக உள்ள காமவேட்கை அவத்தையும் கூறுகிறான். “பண்டு உடையேன்” என்றதால் முன்னாள் முதல் இந்நாள் வரை அவ்வொழுக்கக்கூறுகள் இருந்துகொண்டே இருக்கின்றன என்பதும் புலனாகும்

Transliteration:

nANODu nallANmai paNDuDaiyEn inRuDaiyEn

kAmuRRAr ERum maDal

nANODu – Being modest (and shameful for demeaning conduct)

nallANmai – good manliness

paNDuDaiyEn – from the past have had

inRuDaiyEn – (but) today, I have

kAmuRRAr –  lustful men

ERum maDal – climbing palmyra horse

To be shameful for demeaning conduct  (modest) and manliness have been with me from the time I have been a man or even have been with our lineage. But today for the love of my maiden, I am climbing the palmyra horse, like lustful do. In this verse, most commentators have interpreted, the word “paNDuDaiyEn” as a thing of past; but the word “uDaiyEn”, implies that he still has those traits left in him and also there is definitely a reason for it to be restored, once his maiden has accepted him.

“Modesty and Manilness have been with me for long

 Today, like lustful climbing palmyra horse, is my song“
