தேவர் அனையர் கயவர் அவருந்தாம்

மேவன செய்தொழுக லான்.

                        (குறள் 1073: கயமை அதிகாரம்)

தேவர் அனையர் - வானத்து தேவர்களைப் போன்றவர்களே

கயவர் - கயவரான கீழோரும்

அவருந் - எனெனில் அவரும்

தாம் மேவன - தாம் விரும்பியதை தாம் விரும்பியவாறு

செய்து ஒழுகலான் - செய்துத் திரிவர்

தம் விரும்பியதை, விரும்பியவாறு, தம்மை பணிப்போரும், தடுப்போரும் இன்றி செய்வதில் தேவர்களைப் போன்றே கீழ்மக்களும் என்று சொல்லி மீண்டும் புதிராய் ஒரு குறள்.

சொல்லியது  இதுவாயினும், சொல்லாமல் விட்டது, குறிப்பால் உணர்த்துவது என்னவெனில், தேவர்கள் செய்வது உயர்வானவையும், கயவர்கள் செய்வது தாழ்வானவையுமான செயல்கள் என்பதே. இது பரிமேலழகர் உரை விளக்கமாகக் கூறுவது. ஆயினும் தேவருள்ளும் கயமைத் தனமும் இருந்ததற்கு புராணக்கதைகள் படி, விரித்துக்கூறாமல், “இந்திரனே சாலும் கரி” என்று வள்ளுவர் கூறியதையே கூறவேண்டியதுதான்.

Transliteration:

thEvar anaiyar kayavar avarundAm

mEvana seidhozuga lAn

thEvar anaiyar – Like the heavenly bodies

kayavar – are the people of base nature

avarundAm- because they also

mEvana – whatever they desire to do,

seidh(u) ozugalAn - do as such without inhibition or any control by anything

In doing what they desire, when they desire, both heavenly beings and the base people are the same says this, riddle like verse.

Though what is said explicitly makes it appear unfair, the implied meaning is that heavenly beings do virtuous and base people do lowly deeds – as explained further by ParimElazhagar. Yet, there are ample stories in “purANAs” that even among heavenly beings, there were rogues of base deeds and can be simply said in vaLLuvars’ own words “IndranE sAlum kari”

“In doing whatever they want to do, ‘base’

 are like heavenly beings – not otherwise”
