குறளின் குரல் - 1078

நன்றறி வாரிற் கயவர் திருவுடையர்

நெஞ்சத்து அவலம் இலர்.

                        (குறள் 1072: கயமை அதிகாரம்)

நன்று - நல்லவை ஈதென்று

அறிவாரிற் - அறிந்து, ஒழுகுபவரைவிட

கயவர் - கீழ்க்குணம் உடையவர்களே

திருவுடையர் - செல்வமிக்கவர்களாக இருக்கிறார்கள்

நெஞ்சத்து - (ஏனெனில்) அவர்கள் உள்ளத்தில்

அவலம் இலர் - குற்றவுணர்வே இல்லாதவர்கள்

மீண்டும் ஒரு நையாண்டிக்குறள்! யாரோ அவரைக் கேட்டிருக்கவேண்டும், எப்படி கீழோராம் கயவர்கள் இவ்வளவு செல்வமிக்கவர்களாக உள்ளனர் என்று! அதற்கு பதிலிறுக்கும் விதமாக, நல்லவை ஈதென்று அறிந்து அவற்றின் படி ஒழுகுபவரைவிட கீழ்குணமுடைய கயவர்களே செல்வமுடையவர்களாக இருக்கிறார்கள், எனென்றால், அவர்களுக்குத்தான் உள்ளத்திலே குற்ற உணர்வே இல்லையே என்று! கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர் இக்குறளில்.

இன்றும் இதே கேள்வி தொடர்கிறது. ஆன்றோரும், அறிஞர்களும் தரும் பதிலும் இவ்வாறாகவே உள்ளது. குற்றமின்மையைப் பாராட்டி அல்ல! உள்ளுரையாய், இவ்வாறு செல்வந்தர்களாக இருப்பவர்களுக்கு அவ்வுலகமிராது என்பதை உள்ளுரையாக.உணர்த்தி! இவ்வாறு செல்வம் சேர்ப்பதெல்லாம் வாழ்வா என்று கேட்கும்விதமாக!

Transliteration:

nanRaRi vAriR kayavar tiruvuDaiyar

nejattu avalam ilar

nanR(u) – That such and such things and ways are good

aRivAriR – more than those people, knowing and abiding by such

kayavar - base

tiruvuDaiyar – have wealth

nejattu – (because) in their hearts

avalam ilar – they have no sense of guilt

Another verse of VaLLuvars’ sarcasm! Perhaps someone must have asked him as to how base people are wealthy compared to those who abide by virtuous ways. To answer that, vaLLuvar says, more than the people of virtuous ways, the base are wealthy, as they have no sense of guilt for their ways or means of life. Here he does not say it with a tone of approval, but a hidden tone of admonition.

Strangely, the very same question continues even today. Wise and virtuous men answer the same way as VaLLuvar had done. Again, it is not with the sense of appreciation, but implying, such ill-gotten wealth would not stay or guarantee heavenly abode;  a tone which indirectly asks, if such wealthy life is worth living!

“More than virtuous, aware of good, vile and base are wealthy

Why? Because they have no sense of guilt in their hearts-filthy!”
