ஊணுடை எச்சம் உயிர்க்கெல்லாம் வேறல்ல

நாணுடைமை மாந்தர் சிறப்பு.

                    (குறள் 1012: நாணுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

ஊண் - உண்ணும் ஊணவும்

உடை - உடுக்கும் உடையும்

எச்சம் - மற்ற பிற மேன்மையாகக் காட்டுகிற அடையாளங்களும்

உயிர்க்கெல்லாம் வேறல்ல - எல்லா உயிர்களுக்கும் பொதுவானவை

நாணுடைமை - ஆனால் பழிக்கஞ்சி நாணுதல்

மாந்தர் சிறப்பு - நல்ல மக்களை சிறப்பாக வேறுபடுத்தி காட்டுவதாம்

எல்லோருக்குமே உணவும், உடையும், மற்ற பிற அடையாளங்களும் பொதுவானவையே, அவர்களை சிறப்பித்து காட்டாதவை. அதாவது எல்லோருமே உண்ணுகிறார்கள்; உடுக்கிறார்கள், மற்றபல அடையாளக் குறிகளால் தங்களை பொருளாதார மேன்மை உடையவராக, சிறப்புகள் வாய்ந்தவர்களாகக் காட்டிக் கொள்கிறார்கள். அறுசுவை உண்ணுவதாலும், அழகான உடை உடுப்பதாலும் ஒருவர் மேன்மையுறுவதில்லை. ஆனால் ஒருவரை சிறந்தவராகக் காட்டுவது அவரது பழிபாவத்துக்கு அஞ்சுகிற நாணுடைமையேயாம்.

Transliteration:

UNuDai echcham uyirkellAm vERall

naNUDaimai mAndar siRappu.

UN – the food that one consumes

uDai – the dresses that he wears

echcham – other decorations that show the apparent glory

uyirkellAm vERall – are all not different for anyone.

naNUDaimai – the sensitivity to shame

mAndar siRappu – makes all the differenc and is the true glory

Food that people eat, the dresses they wear are common features in everyones’ life, not different; they don’t show them in exemplary light. After all everyone eats and wears dresses and show through other attributes their status and assumed glory etc,. The gourmet food or beautiful dresses don’t show the true glory of anyone. What makes a person truly exemplary is their sensitivity to shame that they show when they even inadvertently involved in blameful deeds.

“Food, dresses and other such similar needs are common;

 But the sensitivity to shame is the real differentiating one”
