102: (Sense of Shame or Modesty - நாணுடைமை)

[The word “nAN” has several meanings in Tamil lexicon. Most well known are string that is tied across the bow, the shame and modesty. Though modesty and sensitivity to shame are closely connected, they are not one and the same. This chapter is about being sensitive to shame, shameful activities and situations that bring shame to a person.]

கருமத்தால் நாணுதல் நாணுத் திருநுதல்

நல்லவர் நாணுப் பிற.

                    (குறள் 1011: நாணுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

கருமத்தால் - ஒருவர் இழி செயல்களுக்காக

நாணுதல் நாணு - நாணுவதே பொதுவாக நாணம் எனப்படும்

திருநுதல் நல்லவர் - அழகிய நெற்றிகளை உடைய குலமகளிர்

நாணுப் பிற - கொள்ளும் நாணம் குண நலமாகிய பிற வகையைச் சார்ந்ததாகும்

பொதுவாக இழிந்த செயல்களுக்காக நல்லவர்கள் கொள்வதே நாணம் என்றறியப்படும். இவ்வகை நாணம் பண்புக்கேட்டுக்காகக் கொள்ளப்படுவது. ஆகனால் அழகிய நெற்றிகளை உடைய மங்கலம் நிறை குலமாதர்கள் கொள்ளும் நாணம், “அச்சம், மடம், நாணம், பயிர்ப்பு” எனக்கூடிய,  பண்பு நலங்களுள் ஒன்றாகிய நாணமாம்.

நாண் என்றால் என்ன என்பதை வரையறுத்து இவ்வதிக்காரக் கணக்கைத் துவக்குகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

Transliteration:

karumaththAl nANudal nANuth thirunudal

nallavar nANup piRa

karumaththAl – for evil deeds

nANudal nANuth – being shameful is the generally known shame.

thirunudal nallavar – ladies for good families with beautiful foreheads

nANup piRa – what they have is not shame, but modesty, other way “nAN” is defined

What is defined by the word “nAN” is “shame” that good people have for evil deeds they become party to. This feeling of shame is for lack of virtue. But another meaning of “nAN” is “modesty”, which is a virtue that adorns the ladies of beautiful foreheads from good families; it is one of the four attributes defined for the totality of women of virtues.

Thus defining the grammar of the word “nAN”, vaLLuvar begins this chapter.

“Feeling abashed with shame for inappropriate deed

 is different from the modesty of women of great breed”
