ஊனைக் குறித்த உயிரெல்லாம் நாண்என்னும்

நன்மை குறித்தது சால்பு.

                    (குறள் 1013: நாணுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

ஊனைக் குறித்த - உடலென்னும் ஊனாலாகிய கூட்டிகனை நிலையாகக் கொண்டது

உயிரெல்லாம் - எல்லா உயிரும்

நாண் என்னும் - நாணுடைமை என்னும் பழிபாவத்துக்கு வெட்குதலாகிய

நன்மை குறித்தது - பண்பை நிலையாகக் கொண்டதே

சால்பு - சான்றாண்மையாகிய மேன்மை

எல்லார் உயிர்களும் ஊனாலாகிய உடம்பை தமக்கு நிலைக்களனாகக் கொண்டவை. அதே போன்று சான்றாண்மையாகிய மேன்மை நாணுடைமை என்கிற பண்பினை நிலைக்களனாகக் கொண்டவை. எவ்வாறு இவ்வுடம்பானது உயிரை விடாது உறுதியாகப் பிடித்துக் கொள்ள முயற்சிக்குமோ, அதேபோன்று பழி பாவங்களுக்கு வெட்குகிற நல்ல பண்பே, ஒருவரது மேன்மையை உறுதியாகப் பிடித்து வைத்துக்கொள்ளும். உடம்பை உயிர் நீங்குமானால் சவமாவதுபோல, நாணுடைமை நீங்குமானால், ஒருவரது மேன்மையும் நீங்கும் என்பதும் இக்குறளால் உணர்த்தப்படுகிறது.

Transliteration:

uNaik kuRitta uyirellAm nANennum

nanmai kuRittu sAlbu

uNaik kuRitta – The body made of flesh is abode of

uyirellAm – for all ives.

nAN ennum – the sense of shame

nanmai kuRittu – the virtue is the abode of

sAlbu – perfection and elevated status

All lives live in the abode of body made of flesh. Likewise the perfection and the stature live in the abode of sense of shame. Like how the body holds on to the life force without losing its grip, as long as possible, so should be the sense of shame – must hold on to the stature. We are considerd deard, when the life force leaves the body; likewise when the sense of shame leaves a person, his stature is considered dead.

“Sense of shame is the abode of elevated stature

 And the life force is the abode of body, in nature”
