சிறியார் உணர்ச்சியுள் இல்லை பெரியாரைப்

பேணிக்கொள் வேம்என்னும் நோக்கு.

                                    (குறள் 976: பெருமை அதிகாரம்)

சிறியார் - பண்பு நலன்கள் இல்லாதவர்கள், சிறுமதியாளர்கள்

உணர்ச்சியுள் இல்லை - அவர்களது உணர்வில் கூட இல்லை

பெரியாரைப் - ஆன்றகன்ற பெரியோர்களை

பேணிக் கொள்வேம் - அவர்களது பெருமைக்குரிய வழிகளை பின்பற்றுவோம்

என்னும் நோக்கு - என்கிற எண்ணமும் சிந்தனையும்.

பண்பு நலன்கள் இல்லாத சிறுமதியாளர்களது உணர்விலும், உள்ளத்திலும் பெரியோரது பெருமை தரும் வழிகளைக் கண்டு, அவற்றைப் பின்பற்றுவோம் என்னும் எண்ணமும், பார்வையும் இராது. பெருமை என்பது சான்றோர்களைக் கண்டு அவர்களது இயல்பினை உள்ளுக்குள் உணர்ந்து, அவரை விரும்பிப் போற்றுதலால் மட்டுமே வாய்க்கும் என்பதைக் கூறும் குறள்.

Transliteration:

siRiyAr uNarchchiyuL illai periyAraip

pENikkoL vEmennum nOkku

siRiyAr – people of low and no virtues

uNarchchiyuL illai – they don’t have an iota in their feelings

periyAraip - scholarly

pENikkoLvEm – to follow their great and prideful conduct

ennum nOkku – thinking of such outlook.

This verse is primarily about who will not seek the nature of greatness. To have the greatness or glory, a person must adopt the nature of the great and glorious people. Such a thought does not even cross the minds of lowly and hence they will never either know what true pride of greatness is.

“It is not in their thoughts of lowly to seek

 the great and adopt their natures’ streak”
