இறப்பே புரிந்த தொழிற்றாம் சிறப்புந்தான்   

சீரல் லவர்கண் படின்.

இறப்பே புரிந்த  - எல்லை மீறுகை

தொழிற்றாம் - செயல்களைச் செய்வர்

சிறப்புந்தான் - சிறப்பாம் பெருமையானது

சீரல்லவர்கண் - பொருந்தாத சிறுமைக் குணம் கொண்டவர்களிடம்

படின் - ஏற்படுமானால்

இக்குறளுக்கான பரிமேலழகர் உரை சற்றே குழப்பமாக உள்ளது. இக்குறளின் பின்பகுதி பொருள் விளங்குவதாயும், முற்பகுதி எளிதாக விளங்காததாயும் உள்ளது. சிறப்பாம் பெருமை, பொருந்தாத சிறுமைக்குணம் கொண்டவர்க்கு ஏற்படுமானால், அவர்கள் மற்றவர்கள் வருந்தும் படியாக, வரம்பு மீறுதலையே செய்வர் என்று குறள் பொருள் படவேண்டும். “இறப்பே” என்ற சொல் வரம்பு மீறுதலையே குறிக்கிறது.

தகுதியில்லார்க்கு வழங்கப்படும் எத்தகு பெருமையும் தவறாகவே பயன்படுத்தப்படும் என்பதே மையக்கருத்து.

Transliteration:

iRappE purinda thozhiRRAm chiRappundAn

ChiRal lavarkaN paDin

iRappE purinda – transgressing by going beyond the limits

thozhiRRAm – they will do such deeds

chiRappundAn – the glory

ChiRallavarkaN – that does not fit the people of small mindedness

paDin – if they get it.

ParimElazhagars’ commentary for this verse, is a bit confusing. Though the later half of the verse is easy to understand, the first part is not very apparent in its meaning. The word “iRappE” in the verse means, crossing the limits. The verse must be interpreted thus: If lowly people get greatness or glory, they will act excessively for others to suffer.

“Though the lowly people, small minded, may get glory

In their deeds, they will cross all limits to others worry”
