எட்பக வன்ன சிறுமைத்தே ஆயினும்

உட்பகை உள்ளதாங் கேடு.

                        (குறள் 889: உட்பகை அதிகாரம்)

எள் பகவு அன்ன - எள்ளைப் பிளந்து அதன் பாதியளவுக்கு

சிறுமைத்தே ஆயினும் - சிறிய அளவுடையதே ஆனாலும்

உட்பகை - உள்ளுக்குள் ஒளித்து வளர்க்கும் அப் பகை

உள்ளதாங் கேடு - (ஆயினும்) அதிலும் சீர்குலைக்கும் கேடு வரும்

எள்ளே ஒரு சிறிய விதை, அதைப் பிளந்து இரண்டாக்கினால், அதில் ஒரு பாதி எள்ளை விட சிறியதாகும். அவ்வளவே ஒருவர் தம்முள்ளத்தில் பகை கொண்டு இருந்தாலும், அப்பகையாலேயே அவருக்கு அழிவு தரும் கேடு வரும் என்கிறது இக்குறள். கடுகு சிறுத்தாலும் காரம் குறையாது என்பது  பொதுவாக ஒருவருடைய பெருமை அவருடைய உருவத்தில் அல்ல என்பதற்காகச் சொல்லப்பட்டாலும், இங்கும் பொருந்துகிறது. சிறிதளவுதானே என்று வாளா இருந்துவிட்டால், உட்பகையே வேறறுத்து அடியோடு சாய்த்துவிடும்.

எள்ளின் முனையளவு என்று மிகவும் சிறிய பொருளைச் சுட்டச் சொல்லுவது வழக்கம். வள்ளுவர் குறளின் சிறப்பை கூறுவோர் “கடுகைத் துளைத்து” என்று கூறினாலும் வள்ளுவர் கடுகை, சிறியதைக் குறிக்க பயன்படுத்தவில்லை எங்குமே!  எள்ளோடு ஒப்பின் கடுகே காரம் மிக்கது. பகையும் காரத்தோடு தொடர்புடையது. வள்ளுவர் கடுகைச் சொல்லியிருக்கலாமோ?

Transliteration:

eTpaga vanna siRumaiththE Ayinum

uTpagai uLLadhAng kEDu

eL pagavu anna – as if split into two halves the sesame seed

siRumaiththE Ayinum – even if it is that small

uTpagai – enmity fostered inside

uLLadhAng kEDu – will bring big destruction

Sesame seed it self is very small one. If it is split into two halves, each half is even smaller. If someone holds enmity within, which os only half the size of that split sesame seed, it will eventually grow big to bring destruction, says this verse. Though there is another small seed – “mustard”, which is used to imply the acidic nature of something, mostly in the context of referring to the glory of a person despite being in dimunitive stature, vaLLuvars’ choice has been to use sesame seed.

References to the tip of sesame seed, has also been used to denote a tiny stature of something in literature. In fact a poem in praise of KURAL refers to “mustard seed” as a metaphor.  Compared to sesame, mustard seed is acidic in nature; since enmity is also acidic in nature, perhaps, mustard seed could have been a better metaphor.

“Even if it is half the size mustard seed,enmity

 fosterd within, brings destruction of enormity”
