ஏவவும் செய்கலான் தான்தேறான் அவ்வுயிர்

போஒம் அளவுமொரு நோய்.

                        (குறள் 848: புல்லறிவாண்மை  அதிகாரம்)

ஏவவும் - பிறர் “இதைச் செய்” என்று செலுத்தினாலும்

செய்கலான் - செய்யவதற்கறியான்

தான் தேறான் - தாமாகவே இதை இவ்வாறு செய்யவேண்டுமென்ற செயலறிவும் இல்லாதான்

அவ்வுயிர் - அவனுடைய உயிர்

போஒம் அளவும் - அவன் இறந்துபடும் காலம் வரை

ஒரு நோய் - ஒரு தொடர்ந்த பிணியாகத் தான் இருக்கும்

“தமக்காகவும் தெரியாது, சொன்னாலும் புரியாது” என்று பேச்சு வழக்கிலே நாம் கூறுவதையே இக்குறள் கூறுகிறது. தாமாகவே எதையும் செய்யும் அறிவும் இல்லாது, பிறர் இவ்வாறு செய்க என்று செலுத்தியும், ஒன்றைச் செய்ய அறியாதவனுக்கு, அவனுடைய உயிரானது அவன் வாழும் வரையும் பிணியாகத்தான் இருக்கும், என்கிறார் இக்குறள்!

நோயற்ற வாழ்வே குறைவற்ற செல்வம் அல்லவா? அறிவுடைமையே குறைவற்ற செல்வம். அறிவின்மை ஒருவருக்கும் நோயைப் போன்றதே, போக்கிக்கொள்ள முயலாதவரை, உடனிருந்தே, வளர்ந்து, உடம்பில் புரையோடிக் கொல்லவும் செய்யும் என்பதை உள்ளுறையாகச் சொல்வது இக்குறள்.

Transliteration:

Evavum seygalAn thAnthERAn avvuyir

pOom aLavumoru nOi

Evavum – Even if others direct, “do it this way”

seygalAn – a fool who does not know how to do a deed

thAn thERAn – And on his own also, does not know how to do it

avvuyir – his life

pOom aLavum – until he dies

oru nOi – is like a disease.

“He would not know himself nor would understand, even if advised”, is something that people say all the time about some ignorant fools. This verse is an expression of the same thought. In addition, it says the life of such a person is nothing but a lingering disease.

Disease free life is wealth in abundance. Also, wisdom is undiminishing wealth. Ignorance is like disease. Unless one makes an effort to remove his ignorance, it grows inside, to make a body useless and eventually kill the person – this is what is implied through this verse.

“He would not himself, nor would yied to advice;

Such person’s life is a lingering lifelong disease”
