அருமறை சோரும் அறிவிலான் செய்யும்

பெருமிறை தானே தனக்கு.

                        (குறள் 847: புல்லறிவாண்மை  அதிகாரம்)

அரு மறை - அரிய வாழ்வியல் செய்திகளைக் கூறும் நீதி நூல்களைச்

சோரும் - கடைபிடிக்காது தவறும்

அறிவிலான் - பேதையர், அறிவீனர்கள்

செய்யும் - செய்து கொள்வர்

பெரு மிறை - பெரிய துன்பத்தை

தானே தனக்கு - தாமே தமக்கு (வேறு யாருமே செய்யவேண்டாம்)

அறிவிலிகள் தாமே தமக்கு பெரிய துன்பத்தினை செய்துகொள்வர், நல்ல நீதிகளைக் கூறும் நூல்வழிபடி நடவாது அவற்றைத் தவற விடுவார்களாயின். வேறு யாருமே அவர்களுக்கு துன்பம் நினைக்கவும் செய்யவும் வேண்டாம். நல்வழி நூல்கள் கூறுவனவற்றை உள்ளத்தே கொள்ளாமை புல்லறிவாண்மையினால் என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். அவ்வாறு கொள்ளாததால் அவர்கள் துன்பத்திலேயே ஆழ்வார்கள்.

Transliteration:

arumaRai sOrum aRivilAn seyyum

perumiRai thane thanakku

aru maRai – The teachings in books of ethics

sOrum – letting them slip without practicing

aRivilAn – ignorant fool

seyyum - causes

peru miRai – great misery

thane thanakku- for self on his own

Ignorant fools bring up on themselves great misery on their own, by not adhering by the great teachings of ethical works of erudite. Others don’t have to intend or do anything to cause their miseries. For those who donot know good ways on their own and cannot understand the ways taught by ethical works, they are truly ignorant.

“Ignorant fools not adhering to the great teachings drawn

 from ethical works, bring misery to themselves on their own”
