அறிவிலார் தாந்தம்மைப் பீழிக்கும் பீழை

செறுவார்க்கும் செய்தல் அரிது.

                        (குறள் 843: புல்லறிவாண்மை அதிகாரம்)

அறிவிலார் - புல்லறிவாண்மை உடையவர், பேதையர்

தாம் தம்மைப்  - தாமே தமக்குத்

பீழிக்கும் பீழை - தருவித்துக்கொள்ளும் துன்பமானது

செறுவார்க்கும் - அவரோடு பகை பொருந்தி துன்பமே நினைப்பவர்களுக்கும்

செய்தல் அரிது - செய்வதற்கு அரிதாம்.

புல்லறிவாண்மையுடைய பேதையர் தமக்குத் தாமே வருவித்துக்கொள்ளும் பொல்லாங்கும் அதன்கண்ணாக வரும் துன்பமும், அவரது பகைவர்கள் கூட அவர்களுக்குச் செய்ய நினையாதது. பகைவர்களுக்கு, தம்முடைய எதிரிகளுக்கு தொல்லையும், துன்பமும் நினைவது இயல்பு. பொதுவாக அது மிகவும் கடுமையாகவே இருக்கும். அவைகூட அறிவில்லார் தமக்குத்தாமே தேடிக்கொள்வதிலும் கடுமை குறைந்தவையே என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

Transliteration:

aRivilAr thAnthammai pIzhikkum pIzhai

seRuvArkkum seythal aridhu

aRivilAr – ignorant ones

thAn thammai – to themselves

pIzhikkum pIzhai - self-inflicting pain (due to their acts)

seRuvArkkum – even for their sworn enemies

seythal aridhu – to do is rare.

Even the worst enemies can’t think of inflicting suffering and great pain to the ignorant compared to the the self-inflicted pain of the ignorant, due to their own foolish acts. It is very natural that mutual enemies think harm of extreme nature to each other. For ignorant, what they bring upon themselves is worse than what their enemies can do says vaLLuvar Such is the extent of their stupidity.

“Even for enemies to do such harm is rare and impossible,

 compared to self-inlficted harm and pain by the insensible”
