ஆய்ந்தாய்ந்து கொள்ளாதான் கேண்மை கடைமுறை

தான்சாம் துயரம் தரும்.

                        (குறள் 792: நட்பாராய்தல் அதிகாரம்)

ஆய்ந்தாய்ந்து - மேன் மேலும் பல வழிகளாலும் நன்கு ஆராய்ந்து

கொள்ளாதான் - ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாதான் (எதை என்பது அடுத்த சொல்லில்)

கேண்மை - நட்பு

கடைமுறை - முடிவிலே

தான் சாம் - தாமே இறந்துபடக்கூடிய

துயரம் தரும் - துன்பம் விளைவித்து துயரத்தைத் தரும்

ஒருவருடைய பண்பு நலன்களையும், செயல்முறைகளையும் பலவாராக, பலநேரங்களில் நோக்கி, நன்கு ஆராய்ந்து, அவரைப் பற்றி தெளிந்தபின்னரே நட்பென்று கொள்ளாதானுடை நட்பு, முடிவிலே தாமே இறந்து மடியக்கூடிய துன்பங்களை விளைவித்து, அவற்றால் துயரத்தையும் தந்து, மரணத்தையும் தந்துவிடும். இக்குறளும், கடந்த குறளும் ஆராயாமல் கொண்ட நட்பால் விளையும் கேட்டினைக் குறித்தமையின், வள்ளுவர் நட்பாராய்தலின் இன்றியமையாமையை முதலிலே வலியுறுத்துவது தெளிவு.

பழமொழிப்பாடலொன்று ஆராயாமல் கொண்ட நட்பைப் பற்றி, இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது. அன்புடையாராகவே இருப்பினும், ஆராயாமல் ஒருவரோடு கொண்ட நட்பு, இழிவைத்தந்துவிடும் என்று. அப்பாடல் வரிகள்:

“அளிந்தார்க்கண் ஆயினும் ஆராயானாகித்

 தெளிந்தான் விளிந்து விடும்”

ஆராயாமல் நட்பு கொள்வதால் வரும் தீமையைப் பற்றி நாலடியார் பாடலொன்று இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது.

சான்றோர் எனமதித்துச் சார்ந்தாய்மன் சார்ந்தாய்க்குச்

சான்றாண்மை சார்ந்தார்கண் இல்லாயின் சார்ந்தோய்கேள்

சாந்தகத் துண்டென்று செப்புத் திறந்தொருவன்

பாம்பகத்துக் கண்ட துடைத்து.

இது ஆராயாது நட்பு கொண்டவரை, முன்னிலையில் விளித்து, இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது. “நீ சிலரை நற்குணம் உடையவர் என மிகவும் மதித்து நட்புக் கொள்கிறாய்! அப்படி நீ நட்புக் கொண்ட அவர்களிடம் உண்மையிலேயே நற்குணம் இல்லையானால், அவர்களைச் சார்ந்தவனே! உனக்கு நேரும் துன்பத்தினை ஓர் உவமையால் கூறுகிறேன், கேட்பாயாக! அது, ஒருவன் வாசனை மிக்க சந்தனம் இருக்கிறதென நினைத்துச் செப்பைத் திறந்தபோது உள்ளே பாம்பைப் பார்த்தது போலாம்!”

Transliteration:

AyndAindu koLLAdAn kENmai kaDaimuRai

thAnsAm thuyaram tharum

AyndAindu – investigating in many ways as to the nature of friendship

koLLAdAn – and not having

kENmai – friendship (good)

kaDaimuRai – in the end

thAnsAm – for the person to die (rather painfully)

thuyaram tharum – will yield such grief

The attempt to make friendship with persons without thoroughly investigating the ways and deeds of those, will yield trouble and grief for the person so attempts and eill eventually get him to have a painful death. The first two verses of these chapters give the ill and evil of bad friendship, had without proper investigation, making it loud and clear, the intent of the chapter.

A poem from nAlaDiyAr tells a person this: “You seem to make friendship with some people, thinking they are good, If they don’t have such good character or traits as you believe, you will be in grief, which I will relate to you through a metaphor: When some body opens a contained thinking there is sandalwood paste, what if he finds a snake instead? It is like that”. The comparison of goodness to  the fragrance of sandal paste and the evil to snake is indeed an apt one to drive the point.

“The friendship made wiithout deep investigation

  will at the end, yield only death of aggravation"
