80: (Scrutinizing Friendship - நட்பாராய்தல்)

[This chapter discusses how to scrutinize if a friendship is worth it or not, based how in many ways, it has been defined in the preceding chapter. In a different chapter about indulging in deeds, vaLLuvar has already said about thinking before acting (“eNNith thuNiga karumam”). The thought is much more valid for choosing the right friends for most of us, spend more time with friends out side the home either for work or just for moral support and share much more with them than with kin.]

நாடாது நட்டலிற் கேடில்லை நட்டபின்

வீடில்லை நட்பாள் பவர்க்கு.

                        (குறள் 791: நட்பாராய்தல் அதிகாரம்)

நாடாது - ஆராயாமல்

நட்டலிற் - ஒருவரிடம் நட்பு கொள்ளுவதிலும்

கேடில்லை - மிக்க கேடு தருவது ஏதுமில்லை

நட்டபின் - அவ்வாறு ஆராயாது நட்பு கொண்டபின்னர்

வீடில்லை - அத் தீநட்பினை விட்டொழிப்பதும் எளிதில்லை

நட்பு ஆள்பவர்க்கு - அத்தகைய நட்பைப் பெற்றவர்க்கு

ஒருவரோடு நட்பு கொள்ளுவது ஏற்புடையதா, இல்லையா என்று ஆராயாது, நட்பு கொள்ளுவதிலும் கேடு விளைவிப்பது வேறொன்றுமில்லை. அவ்வாறு ஆராயது நட்பு கொண்டுவிட்டபிறகு, அதுவும் தீநட்பாக இருக்குமேயாயின் அந்நட்பை விட்டொழிப்பதும் அவ்வளவு எளிதில்லை.  அதனால் ஆராயாமல் நட்பு கொள்ளாக்கூடாமையை வலிவுடன் சொல்லி இவ்வதிகாரத்தைத் தொடங்குகிறார்.

இக்கருத்தையொட்டிய நற்றிணைப் பாடலொன்று, இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது. (32:8-9)  “நாடி நட்பின் அல்லது நட்டு நாடார்தம் ஒட்டியோர் திறத்தே”

Transliteration:

nADAdu naTTaliR kEDillai naTTapin

vIDillai naTpAL bavarkku

nADAdu – Not seriously understanding and knowing the person

naTTaliR – and making friends with the person (more than that)

kEDillai – there is no harm

naTTapin – after making such bad friendship

vIDillai – to relinquish such bad friendship is extremely difficult

naTp(u) ALbavarkku – for one who made such friendship

There is no greater danger or disaster, than to make friendship without scrutinizing about someone and not knowing about the person. If such a evil friendship is made, it is not easy to be get rid of such friendship either; Saying so bluntly about the need to scrutinize about the other person before making friendship, vaLLUvar begins this chapter.

“None more disastrous and evil than making friendship uninquired!

 After making bad friends, task of relinquishing, never accomplished”
