அங்கணத்துள் உக்க அமிழ்தற்றால் தங்கணத்தார்

அல்லார்முன் கோட்டி கொளல்.

அங்கணத்துள் உக்க - வீட்டு முற்றத்தே சாக்கடையில் வீணாக்கப்பட்ட

அமிழ்தற்றால் - அமிழ்தம் போன்றதாம்

தங்கணத்தார் - தமக்கிணை என்று

அல்லார்முன் - என்று சொல்லத் தகாதவர்முன் (அறிவிலார்முன்)

கோட்டிக கொளல் - கற்றோர் அவையென்றெண்ணி பேசுவது

தமக்கொப்பாரும் இணையுளோரும், கற்றறிந்தாரும் இல்லாதாருடைய அவையில் சிறந்த பொருள்களைப் பற்றிப் பேசுவதென்பது, வீட்டு முற்றத்து சாக்கடையில் அமுதத்தை கொட்டி வீணடித்தல் போலாம்.  பாழ்நிலத்தில் பயிரிட்டால்போல் என்றும் சொல்லலாம்.

தகுதியில்லாரிடத்து சிறந்த பொருளைச் சேர்ப்பதை பலரும் கூறியுள்ளனர். “புல்லிடை உகுத்த அமுதேயும் போல்” என்பார் கம்பர், மந்தரைப் படலத்தில். “கல்வியினாய கழிநுட்பம் கல்லார்முன் சொல்லிய நல்லவும் தீயவாம்” என்கிறது பழமொழிப் பாடல்.  நன்மையறியாத கீழ்மக்கட்கு அறமுறைமை அறிவுறுக்குமிடத்து அது, பன்றிக்குக் கூழ்வார்க்குந் தொட்டியில் தேமாம்பழத்தைச் சாறு பிழிந்தாற்போல் தகுதியற்றதாகும்; அன்றியும், ஒரு மலைப்பாறையின்மேல் அறையப்படும் மரத்தாற் செய்யப்பட்ட முளைக்குச்சி நுனி சிதைந்து அதனுள் இறங்கிப் பொருந்தாமைபோல அவ்வறவுரையும் அவர் செவிக்கு நுழைந்து பொருந்தாதனவாகும் என்கிறது கீழ்வரும் நாலடியார் பாடல்.

பன்றிக்கூழ்ப் பத்தரில் தேமா வடித்தற்றால்;


நன்றறியா மாந்தர்க் கறத்தா றுரைக்குங்கால்;


குன்றின்மேற் கொட்டுந் தறிபோல் தலைதகர்ந்து


சென்றிசையா வாகுஞ் செவிக்கு.

angaNaththul ukka - wasted in the drain of courtyard

amizhdaRRAl - the nectar

thangaNaththAr - those that are like-minded in erudition

allArmun - cannot say so (that they are like-minded)

kOTTi koLal- to speak wastefully thinking they are an assembly of scholars

It is such a waste to speak words of wisdom before the assembly of fools that are not even close in learning the speakers learning; it is like wasting ambrosia or nectar in the sewer or drainage in the courtyard. We can also liken it to attempting to cultivate in the waste-land.

About the uselesness of speaking to an illiterate audience has been often talked about in many literary works such as Pazhamozhi nAnURu, nAlaDiyAr. nAlaDiyar uses an interesting analogy of adding sweet mango juice in the porridge container of pigs.
