துறந்தார் படிவத்த ராகி இறந்தாராய்ந்து

என்செயினும் சோர்விலது ஒற்று.

துறந்தார் - பற்றற்றவர் (ஒற்றருக்கு துறவிகளைப் போல பற்றின்மை தேவை)

படிவத்தராகி - தவ ஒழுகுதல் போல நியமங்களைக் கொண்டவராக இருந்து

இறந்து ஆராய்ந்து - முற்றிலுமாக கிடைக்கும் தகவல்களை பிழை களைந்து ஆராய்ந்து

என்செயினும் - பகைவரிடம் சிக்கும் போது, அவர்கள் கொல்வதுபோல் துன்புறுத்திடினும்

சோர்விலது - தம்முடைய உறுதியில் தளறாது நிற்பவரே

ஒற்று - ஒற்றர்களாவர்கள்

ஒற்றருக்கு இருக்கவேண்டிய கட்டுபாடான வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லும் குறளிது. அவர்கள் துறவிகளைப் போல் வேண்டியவர், வேண்டாதவர் என்ற பற்றுகளைக் அறுத்தவராக இருக்கவேண்டும். தவநெறிகளை கொண்டு சீரிய விரதங்களை மேற்கொண்டவர்கள் போல் நியமங்களைக் கொண்டவராக இருக்கவேண்டும். சேகரிக்கும் தகவல்களை அவற்றின் தரமும், பொருளும் ஆராய்ந்து இது நம்பத்தகுந்தது, அல்லதற்றது என்றறிய வேண்டும். பகைவரிடம் சிக்கிக்கொண்டால், அவர்கள் கொன்றே போடுமளவுக்குத் துன்பு செய்தாலும், உறுதி குலையாமல் இருக்கவேண்டும். அத்தகையவர்களே ஒற்றர்களாக இருக்கத்தக்கவர்கள்.

சீவகசிந்தாமணி படிவம் என்பதை வேடம் புனைதல் என்ற பொருளில் கையாளுகிறது. “பாத்தில்சீர்ப் பதுமுகன் படிவவொற்றாளர் சொற் கோத்தென்ன”  என்னும் வரிகள் கூறுவது இதுவே: “நீக்கம் இல்லாத புகழையுடை பதுமுகன் மறைந்த வேடங்கொண்ட ஒற்றர் ஒருவர் கூறிய சொற்கு மற்றும் இருவர் சொல்லும் சேர்ந்தது என்று கருதி”

Transliteration:

thuRandAr paDivaththarAgi iRandArAindhu

enseyinum sOrviladu oRRu

thuRandAr – those who are without desires, saintly

paDivaththarAgi – stringent in austerities

iRand(u) ArAindhu – completely researching the information gathered, obtained

enseyinum – even if the opponents give severe torture to the extent of death

sOrviladu – standing absolutely resolute

oRRu – are the people that are true spies.

This verse defines the structure of a spys’ life. Spies should be devoid of likes and dislikes when it comes to dealing with people, almost having a saintly posture; they must follow the rigors as penitents do; they must qualify and comprehend the data they gather, information they derive and decide the believability of the same; they must stay absolutely resolute not to give in to the pressures when caught by enemies, even if goes to the extent of getting killed. Only such hardened people can be good spies.

The word “paDivam” denotes “a disguise”, in some literary works.

“As detached as ascestic, stringent as penitents, well informed and enlightened,

 Resolute even when caught and tortured by enemies, are spies that are revered”
