மறைந்தவை கேட்கவற் றாகி அறிந்தவை

ஐயப்பாடு இல்லதே ஒற்று.

                            (குறள் 587: ஒற்றாடல் அதிகாரம்)

மறைந்தவை - மற்றவர்கள் ஒளித்துச் செய்யும் செயல்களைப் பற்றி

கேட்க - கேட்டு அறியும் (தகவல்களை பலவாறு சேகரித்து)

வற்றாகி - வல்லவராகி

அறிந்தவை - அவ்வாறு அறிந்தவைகளின் துணைகொண்டு

ஐயப்பாடு - செயல்களில் ஈடுபடுகையில் சந்தேகப்பட்டுக்

இல்லதே - கொண்டிராமல் இருப்பதே

ஒற்று - நல்ல ஒற்றருக்கு அழகாகும்

நல்ல ஒற்றருக்கு அழகே மற்றவர்கள், குறிப்பாக பகையெண்ணத்தில் ஒளித்துச் செயல்களில் ஈடுபடுபவர்கள், செய்யும் செயல்களைப் பற்றிய தகவல்களை பல்வேறு வழிகளில் கேட்டறியும் வல்லவராகி, அவ்வாறு அறிந்த தகவல்களின் துணைகொண்டு, தக்கவாறு எதிர்வினையாற்றுகையில், செய்வது சரியா, தவறா என்னும் ஐயங்கள் கொள்ளாமல் செய்வதாகும். இதுவே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து. ஒற்றருக்குண்டான இலக்கணக்கூறுகளை மேலும் கூறுவது.

Transliteration:

maRaindavai kETkavaRRAki aRindavai

iayppADu illadE oRRu

maRaindavai – Deeds done in hiding by others (especially enemies).

kETka – listening to as said by others.

vaRRAki – become capable to (as described above)

aRindavai – using such information collected

iayppADu – doubting if the action taken on such information would be appropriate

illadE – not having such doubts

oRRu – those with such traits are true spies

Another verse that defines how spies should be! A great spy is one that listens to information from many sources, understands the deeds done in hiding by others, especially enemies, and is capable of taking appropriate actions when needed.without doubts if the information obtained and researched and the action takens are right or wrong.

“A good spy must bring out all hidden facts,

 Must be capable of acting without doubts”
