துளியின்மை ஞாலத்திற்கு எற்றற்றே வேந்தன்

அளியின்மை வாழும் உயிர்க்கு.

                         (குறள் 557: கொடுங்கோன்மை அதிகாரம்)

துளியின்மை - மழையென்னும் வாரி வழங்காது பொய்த்தால்

ஞாலத்திற்கு - உலகத்திற்கு

எற்று - எப்படியோ? துன்பத்தை உணர்த்தும் வியப்புச் சொல்

அற்றே - அவ்வகைத் துன்பந்தானே - அதேபோல் துன்பம்தான் என்று சொல்வது

வேந்தன் - அரசனின்

அளியின்மை - அன்பும், அருளும் அற்று முறையற்ற (கொடுங்கோன்மை) ஆட்சியில்

வாழும் - வாழ்கின்ற

உயிர்க்கு - குடிமக்களுக்கு.

மேகமானது பொழியாமல், மழையின் நீர்த்துளி வீழாமல், நிலம் வாடுவது போல, செங்கோல் தவறிய ஆள்வோர் ஆட்சியில் வாழும் குடிமக்களும் வாடுவர் என்பதே வள்ளுவர் இக்குறளில் கூறும் கருத்து! “எற்று”, “அற்று” என்னும் சொற்கள் துன்பத்தை உணர்த்தும் வியப்புச் சொற்கள், “அந்தோ” “ஐயகோ” என்னும் சொற்களைபோல்!

இக்குறள் செங்கோன்மை அதிகாரத்தில் கண்ட, “வான்நோக்கி வாழும் உலகெல்லாம் மன்னவன் கோல்நோக்கி வாழும் குடி” என்ற குறளை மறுவாக்கம் செய்துள்ளது. “நீரின்றி அமையாது உலகு” என்பது வான் சிறப்பு அதிகாரத்தில் ஏற்கனவே வள்ளுவர் சொல்லியதுதான். இதை வேறுவிதமாக நான்மணிக்கடிகை இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது.

மழையின்றி மாநிலத்தார்க் கில்லை; மழையும் 


தவம்இல்லார் இல்வழி இல்லை; தவமும் 


அரசன் இலாவழி இல்லை; அரசனும்

முறையாக ஆட்சி செய்பவனே சிறந்த அரசன். அரசன் நல்ல ஆட்சி செய்யவில்லையென்றால் நாட்டில் மழை பெய்யாது. மழையில்லா விட்டால் மக்களுக்கு நன்மையில்லை. மக்கள் இல்லையென்றால் அரசனும் இல்லை என்பதை மேற்கண்டபாடல் சொல்லி, மழையின்மையைக் கொடுங்கோன்மையின் விளைவாக உணர்த்துகிறது.

Transliteration:

thuLiyinmai njAlaththiRku eRRaRRE vEndhan

aLiyinmai vAzhum uyirkku.

thuLiyinmai – Rains failing

njAlaththiRku – for this earth

eRR(u) – how it is! (Exclamation implying pitiable - doesn’t it cause misery?)

aRRE  - such is (similar exclamation conforming pitiable misery)

vEndhan – ruler’s

aLiyinmai – lack of grace or just rule

vAzhum – for living

uyirkku – citizens of the world

When rains fail, the land suffers with dryness and vegetation and thus pushing people to miserable living. Such is the plight of people that live under the despotic rule or rules whose lack of grace and justice make people suffer. The words “eRRu”, “aRRu” are words such as “alas”, exclamation words implying pitiable state.

VaLLuvar has said earlier “nIrindRi amaiyAdhu ulagu”  (without rains world does not remain) in the chapter on the glory of rains. This verse directly reflects the thought expressed in the previous chapter through the verse, “vAnnOkki vAzhum ulagellAm mannavan kOlnOkki vAzhum kuDi” and is a rewrite of the same in different words.

A similar thought is expressed in a nAnmaNikkaDigai poem (49) in chain of inferences. “No prosperity of people without rains; when there are no penitents, rains will fail. Such penitence is not to be seen, when not suppored by rulers. Rulers are not there without citizens” is the thought expressed in that poem.

“Like the barren land without rains, is the life

 Under the despotic ruler - nothing but strife”
