மன்னர்க்கு மன்னுதல் செங்கோன்மை அஃதின்றேல்

மன்னாவாம் மன்னர்க் கொளி.

மன்னர்க்கு - அரசர்களுக்கு, ஆள்வோர்களுக்கு

மன்னுதல் - நிலைபெற்ற புகழைத் தருவது

செங்கோன்மை - நீதிவழுவா ஆட்சி

அஃதின்றேல் - ஆட்சி அவ்வாறில்லையாயின்

மன்னாவாம் - நிலைபெறாதாம்

மன்னர்க்கு - அரசர்களுக்குப்

ஒளி - புகழ்

ஆளுவோர்க்கு, அவர்களது புகழ் உலகில் நிலைபெறுதல், அவர்களது செங்கோல் வளையாது செய்யும் ஆட்சியை வைத்துத்தான். அவ்வாறில்லாது கொடுங்கோன்மையுடன் விளங்குமானால், அவர்களது புகழ் நிலைபெறாது.

மீண்டும் ஒரு அத்தியாய நிரப்பியான குறள். தெரிந்த கருத்தையே இவ்வதிகாரத்திலும் சொல்லுகிறார். செங்கோன்மை என்று சொல்லி பின்னர் அஃதின்றேல் என்றதால், கொடுங்கோன்மையைப் பற்றிச் சொல்வதாகக் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.

Transliteration:

Mannarkku mannudal senkOnmai ahdindREl

mannAvAm mannark koLi

Mannarkku – For the king or ruler

mannudal – what makes their glory stay permanent

senkOnmai – their just rule (rule by scepter)

ahdindREl – when just rule is not there or despotic rule is there

mannAvAm – wont be permanent

mannarkk(u) – for the rulers (what?)

oLi – the glory

For rulers, their glory stays in this world beyond their days etched in the pages of history, when they give a just rule, a rule by scepter. When the rule is not just and the ruler is despotic, there is no glory that will be permanent for the ruler. The glory that seems to be there during their power is shallow, transient and obtained through wielding oppressive power.

This is yet another verse to fill the chapter to speak about an already known fact. Though there is no direct mention of despotic rule or ruler, the mention of rule by scepter followed by a clause of “if it is not rule by scepter” imply the despotic rule.

“The stability of the rule is assured by the scepter that is just
