அல்லற்பட்டு ஆற்றாது அழுதகண் ணீரன்றே

செல்வத்தைத் தேய்க்கும் படை

                         (குறள் 555: கொடுங்கோன்மை அதிகாரம்)

அல்லற்பட்டு - ஆள்வோனின் கொடுங்கோன்மையால் மிகவும் துன்பப்பட்டு

ஆற்றாது - அது பொறுக்கமாட்டாது

அழுத கண்ணீர் அன்றே - குடிமக்கள அழுது பெருக்கும் கண்ணீர் அல்லவோ

செல்வத்தைத் - அரசின் செல்வத்தை, நாட்டின் செழிப்பைக்

தேய்க்கும் - குறைத்து, அழிக்கின்ற

படை - கருவியாகும்

கொடுங்கோல் ஆட்சியினால் குடிமக்கள் அல்லலுற்று, அவர்கள் நாளும் படும் துன்பத்திலே ஆற்றமுடியாமல் அழுது கண்ணீராய் பெருக்குவது அல்லவோ, ஒரு ஆட்சியின் வளத்தை தேய்த்து அழிக்கின்ற கருவியாகும். இது புறப்பகையை விட வலிமை மிக்க ஒரு ஆயுதமாகும்.

பழமொழிப் பாடலொன்றும் இக்கருத்தையொட்டி, குடிப் பிறப்பு, துணை, செல்வம் முதலிய வலிமை உடையார் அவையிலாரை துன்புறுத்தும் போது, தாங்க இயலாது அவர்கள் தங்கள் கண்களிலிருந்து பெருக்கிய கண்ணீரே அவர்க்கு கூற்றமாய் வீழ்ந்துவிடும், என்கிறது.

தோற்றத்தால் பொல்லார்; துணை இலார்; நல்கூர்ந்தார்;

மாற்றத்தால் செற்றார்’ என, வலியார் ஆட்டியக்கால்

ஆற்றாது அவர் அழுத கண்ணீரவை அவர்க்குக்

கூற்றமாய் வீழ்ந்து விடும்.

Transliteration:

allaRpaTTu ARRAdu azhudhakaN NIranRE

selvaththaith thEikkum paDai

allaRpaTTu – Because of the suffering of tyrannic, oppressive rule

ARRAdu – beyond the limits of endurance, distressingly

Azhudha kaNNIr anRE – the flood of tears shed by the citizens – won’t it be

selvaththaith – the prosperity of the country

thEikkum – diminishing

paDai – machine?

A tyrannic rule would bring unbearable sufferings to the citizens to make them shed tears everyday. Such ruler does not need external threats of enemies; the tears of opprerssed citizens, become instrument to slowly decay the wealth of the ruler and the country to eventually destroy the ruler.

A similar verse in Pazhamozhi nAnUru says, because of birth, support and wealth if somebody becomes despotic to make others suffer and shed tears, then the tears of oppressed are powerful enough to be the death god for the oppressor.

“Tears of unbearably oppressed citizens act as the potent weapons

 To decay the wealth of tyrants and lead them to path of destruction”
