குறளின் குரல் - 404

தொட்டனைத் தூறும் மணற்கேணி மாந்தர்க்குக்


கற்றனைத் தூறும் அறிவு.

                        (குறள் 396: கல்வி அதிகாரம்)

Translitertion:

thoTTanaith thUrum maNaRkENi mAndharkkuk

kaRRanath thUrum aRivu

thoTTanaiththUrum – When dig more, more water will flow

maNaRkENi – in the spring of sandy soil

mAndharkkuk – for people of this world

kaRRanaththUrum – to the extent of their pursuit to learn will spring

aRivu – their intellect

This verse is also an oft-quoted one. It is a common place knowledge that more we dig the sandy soil, more water springs; so is intellect; it springs and sprouts when a person continues to learn as much as possible. Kambar expresses the same thought of intellect springing more by learning more  - “nUlvaraith thoDarndhu payththoDum pazhagi nuNangiya nuvalarum uNarvE”.  A simple verse extoling the merits of learning!

“As much as it is dug water springs in the pond of sandy soil

So true it is, fountain of knowledge also comes only with toil”

தமிழிலே:

தொட்டனைத்தூறும் - தோண்டத்தோண்ட நீர்சுரக்கும்

மணற்கேணி - நல்ல மணற்பரப்பிலே

மாந்தர்க்குக்
 - மக்களுக்கு

கற்றனைத்தூறும் - அவர்கள் கற்றுக்கொள்ளும் அளவுக்கு மேன் மேலும் பெருகும்

அறிவு - அறிவானது

இக்குறளும் வெகுவாக மேற்கோளிடப்படுவது. மணற்பரப்பில் நீரானது தோண்டுமளவுக்கு ஏற்றார்போல் சுரக்கும். அதைப்போல, கற்பவர்களுக்கு அவர்கள் கற்குமளவிற்கும் அறிவானது மேன்மேலும் பெருகும், என்பது இக்குறளில் எளிதாகப் பெறப்படும் பொருள். கம்பராமயணத்தில் “நூல்வரைத் தொடர்ந்து பயத்தொடும் பழகி நுணங்கிய நுவலரும் உணர்வே” கம்பர் கூறுவது, கற்றனைத்தூறும் அறிவு என்பதையே!
