அளவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சத் தறம்போல நிற்கும்

களவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சில் கரவு.

                               (குறள் 288:  கள்ளாமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

aLvaRindhAr nenjath thaRampOl niRkum

kaLavaRindhAr nenjil karavu

aLvaRindhAr – Those that stead by the order and limits of virtuous ways specified for his ascetic life

nenjath(thu) – in their minds

aRampOl niRkum – like virtues stay (in the minds of)

kaLavaRindhAr – those who know only bad deeds of stealing

nenjil – in their minds will reside

karavu – only vile/wicked thoughts.

The minds of ascetics that stay by the virtuous, righteous order ordained for them will be filled with virtues. Likewise, the minds of those who steal from others will be filled with vile, wicked thoughts. A simple truth known to everyone is said in this verse. But there is subtle point of resolve implied here. Like the ascetics will not steer away from the righteous, virtuous ways in their heart, the cunning will come to stay in the hearts of those who indulge in stealing; vaLLuvar underlines the importance of not stealing.

“Vrtue resides in the mind of ascetic of virtuous creed

 Wicked thoughts reside in thieving mind of evild deed”

தமிழிலே:

அளவறிந்தார் - தமக்கு வகுக்கப்பட்ட அறநெறிகளின் எல்லைகளில் வாழும் நெறியினர்

நெஞ்சத்(து) - நெஞ்சத்தில்

அறம்போல நிற்கும் - அறம் நின்றுவாழ்வது போல

களவறிந்தார் - களவென்னும் தீயொழுக்கம் மட்டுமே அறிந்தார்தம்

நெஞ்சில் - நெஞ்சிலே குடிகொள்ளும்

கரவு - வஞ்சமென்னும் தீயெண்ணம்.

துறவறத்திலிருப்போருக்கு வகுக்கப்பட்ட நெறி, நியம எல்லைகளில் நின்று வாழுகின்றவருடைய நெஞ்சில் அறமே தங்கும்; அதுபோல பிறரிடம் உள்ளவற்றை கவர்ந்துகொள்ளும் திருடர்களின் நெஞ்சங்களிலே வஞ்சக எண்ணமே குடிகொண்டிருக்கும். மற்றொரு உள்ளங்கை நெல்லிக்கனியான,  “அவர்களிடம் அது உள்ளதுபோல் இவர்களிடம் இது உள்ளது” என்பது போல ஒரு குறள். அறவழிகளில் ஊறியவர்களுக்கு அறத்தில் உள்ள உறுதிப்பாட்டைக் குறித்து, அதேபோல, திருடுபவர்களுக்கு வஞ்சக எண்ணம் ஊறி நிலைத்துவிடும் என்று சொல்லி, எதில் உறுதிப்பாடு கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்பதை அடிக்கோடிட்டு இருக்கிறார். இக்குறளில்.
