பயனில்சொல் பாராட்டு வானை மகன்எனல்

மக்கட் பதடி யெனல்.

                              (குறள் 196: பயனில சொல்லாமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

Paynilsol pArATTu vAnai magan enal

makkaT padhaDi yenal

Paynilsol  - useless words

pArATTuvAnai  - one that says such

magan enal – are not called people

makkaT – they are like

padhaDi enal – little waste that’s born with paddy

A waste born alongside with Paddy in the field is called “padar” (chaff or tailing). People that engage in useless vain-speech are likened to such insignificant, useless tailing, though they are born in the society with other people. After the harvest, they remove the “padar” before bagging the paddy for consumption. The connotation of removal shows that such people will be ostracized from the society.

Through this verse, vaLLuvar suggests people of vain-speech are not even considered as people of any life and are considered among the worst waste. He implies, smallness, uselessness, lifelessness – all in one word to highlight the lowly state of such people. Would anyone in the right frame of mind not think about this?

“Called not a human, a person of vain speech

  But a chaff or tailing by the society to impeach”

தமிழிலே:

பயனில்சொல் - யாருக்கும் பயனில்லாத சொற்களை

பாராட்டுவானை - சொல்கின்றவனை

மகன்எனல் – மனிதருள் ஒருவராகக் கொள்ள முடியாது

மக்கட் – அவர்கள் மனிதருள்

பதடியெனல் – நெல்லோடு பிறக்கும் எதற்கும் பயனில்லாத பதரைப் போன்றவர்கள்

நெற்பயிரோடு பிறக்கின்ற பதரை நீக்கிவிட்டு நெல்லை மட்டும்தான் நாம் கொள்கிறோம். நெல் அறுவடைக்குப் பிறகு, பதரடித்தல் என்று சொல்லுவார்கள். பதரை நீக்கி, நெல்லை மட்டும் பயனுக்குக் கொள்ளுவதுபோல, மக்கள் கூட்டத்தில் பயனில்லாத சொற்களை எப்போதும் பேசுகிறவர்களையும், நாம் மனிதராகக் கருதுவதில்லை. அவர்களும் மனிதரோடு பிறந்தாலும், பயனில்லாத பதர்களுக்கு ஒப்பானவர்களே.

இக்குறளின் வாயிலாக, வீண்பேச்சாளரை மக்களுள் ஒருவராக சேர்க்காதத்து மட்டுமல்லாமல், விலங்காயும், மற்றும் உயிர் உள்ள எவையாயும் சேர்க்காமல், அவர்களை பதர் என்னும் உயிரற்ற, எதற்கும் உதவாத, அளவில் மிகவும் சிறிதான என்று இழிமையின் மொத்த உருவாகச் சொல்லுகிறார். இதற்குப் பிறகும், வீண்பேச்சினை வித்தகமாக எண்ணுபவர்கள் சிந்திக்காமல் இருக்கமுடியுமா?
