குறளின் குரல் - 164

ஒறுத்தாரை ஒன்றாக வையாரே வைப்பர்

பொறுத்தாரைப் பொன்போற் பொதிந்து.

                  (குறள் 155: பொறையுடமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

oRuththArai ondRaga vaiyArE vaippar

poRuththAraip ponpOR podhindhu

oRuththArai  - who does not exhibit forbearance and punishes somebody who has caused harm

ondRaga  - value him as a person of virtue

vaiyArE – will not keep them in good books

vaippar – But will do so

poRuththAraip – one who has forbearance for people that mean or cause harm

ponpOR – like precious gold

podhindhu- profusely

When others do ignorable mistakes or misdeeds, those who punish them will not be respected by the society; on the otherhand, if forbearance is shown such character is profusely appreciated and liked like the precious gold.

Thugh vaLLuvar generally says, will keep and not keep, parimElazagar says, “wisemen” in his commentary. Mostly patience is a much a appreciated virtue. In Ramyana, Hanuman mentions about Seetha’s patience in one sentence which is so etched in the pages of Kamban’s work. “ iRpiRappu enbhadhu ondRum irum poRai enbadhu ondRum” (இற்பிறப்பு என்பது ஒன்றும் இரும்பொறை என்பது ஒன்றும்). 

The general idea promoted by this verse is that people of forbearance, patience have high value and are respected and as precious gold. No such value is there for people that lose it and urge to punish even the small mistakes. This verse must also be read in the context of “selliDaththukk kAppAn sinam kAppAn”.

“Wisemen will not count those who avenge with impatience

  But keep as precious gold ones that have utmost tolerance”

தமிழிலே:

ஒறுத்தாரை – சிறியோர் செய்த பிழைகளை பொறுத்துக்கொள்ளாமல் தண்டிப்பவரை

ஒன்றாக – ஒரு பொருட்டாக

வையாரே – சான்றோர் மதிக்கமாட்டார்கள்

வைப்பர் – ஆனால் அப்படி மதிப்பர்

பொறுத்தாரைப் - பொறுமையை கடைபிடிப்பவர்களை

பொன்போற் – உயர்ந்த பொன்னைப் போற்றுவது போல

பொதிந்து- மிகுந்து

மற்றவர் செய்யும் மறந்து மன்னிக்கக்கூடிய சிறுபிழைகளைப் பொறுத்துக்கொள்ளாது தண்டிப்பவர்களை யாரும் ஒரு பொருட்டாக மதிக்கமாட்டார்கள். ஆனால் பொறுமையை கடைபிடிப்பவர்களை விலையுயர்ந்த பொன்னைப் போற்றுவதுபோல மிகுந்து போற்றி மகிழ்வார்கள்.

வள்ளுவர் பொதுப்படையாக “வைப்பார், வைக்கமாட்டார்” என்றதை பரிமேலழகர் “சான்றோர்கள்” என்று ஏற்றிச் சொன்னாலும், பொதுவாக, பொறுமையைக் கடைபிடிப்பவர்கள எல்லோரும் பாராட்டத்தான் செய்வார்கள். மீண்டும் இராமாயணத்தில் சீதையின் பொறுமையைப்பற்றி ஒரு இடத்தில் அனுமன், “இற்பிறப்பு என்பது ஒன்றும் இரும்பொறை என்பது ஒன்றும்” என்பான்.  இக்குறளால் பொறுமையை கடைபிடிப்பவர்களுக்கு உயர்ந்த மதிப்பு உண்டு என்பதை வலியுறுத்துவதைக் காண்கிறோம்.  தண்டிப்பதில் இன்பம் இல்லை, மன்னிப்பதில்தான் இன்பம் என்று பின்னர் வரும் குறளுக்கு முன்னோடியாக சொல்லப்பட்ட பொதுக்கருத்து.  இக்கருத்தை “செல்லிடத்துக்காப்பான் சினங்காப்பான்” என்ற குறளில் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்தொடு இணைத்து அறிந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும்.
