ஒறுத்தார்க்கு ஒருநாளை இன்பம் பொறுத்தார்க்குப்

பொன்றுந் துணையும் புகழ்.

                  (குறள் 156:   பொறையுடமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

oRuththArkku orunALai inbam poRuththArkkup

pondRun thuNaiyum pugaz

oRuththArkku – when a person punishes another for the misdeeds of that person

orunALai -  may be for a day

inbam – there is happiness that either a fitting rebuke is done, a false sense of justice rendered

poRuththArkkup – but when somebody is forbearing for such misdeeds, ( *to make them realize)

pondRun thuNaiyum – till their death or the worlds end **

pugaz – glory

** parimElazhagar says till the world end, which is questionable, but till the persons demise  is possible

What is more important? A pleasure of revenge for a brief time for mistakes of others or undying fame for tolerating and even forgiving, giving the other person a chance to mend and make amends appropriately? This can be answered in many ways. vaLLuvar says in a different verse, “innA seydhArai oRuththal avar nANa nannayam seydhuviDal” – when somebody deliberately causes harm, to make the person realize the folly, forgetting, doing some unexpected good,  is the best form punishment.

The momentary pleasure or so imagined is but an illusion mostly. If there was some misdeed done, the true loss of that can never be brought back by punishing. By forgiving, a fulfilling happiness, an opportunity for the other person to change is initiated. Also it gives to the person that tolerates a lasting glory for the life time. parimElazhagar  adds “world “ to the meaning of the “pondRum” to interpret it as “until the demise of the world”. Did he think the world would perish oneday or that was not going to happen and hence the glory would always be there? Either way, “until the demise” of the person is more realistic scenario.

“Punishing may appear to bring pleasure for a brief time

  But to forgive and tolerate will spring glory for life time”

ஒறுத்தார்க்கு – ஒருவரை அவர்செய்யும் சிறு பிழைகள், இவற்றுக்காக தண்டிப்பவர்களுக்கு

ஒருநாளை – அன்று ஒருநாளக்கு வேண்டுமானால்

இன்பம் – மகிழ்ச்சி ஏற்படலாம் (ஏற்படும் என்பது உறுதியான நிலைப்பாடு அல்ல)

பொறுத்தார்க்குப் – ஆனால் அவ்வாறு பிழைசெய்பவர்களிடமும் பொறுமையோடு இருப்பவர்களுக்கு (அவர்களை உணரவைக்கும் விதமாக*)

பொன்றுந் துணையும் – அவர்கள் மரணிக்கும் வரை அல்லது உலகம்அழியும் வரை **

புகழ் - புகழானது நிலைத்திருக்கும்.

**உலகம் அழியும் வரை என்று பரிமேலழகர் உரை கூறுகிறது, இது ஐயத்துக்குரியது!

சிறிது நிலைத்திருக்கும் மகிழ்வா அல்லது மங்காப் புகழா என்று கேள்விக்குப் பலவிதமாக விடையளிக்கமுடியும். அவற்றுள் ஒன்றுதான்.  ஒருவர் தவறு இழைக்கும்போது, அது மன்னிக்ககூடியதாக இருந்தால், அந்த மன்னிப்பை உணர்ந்து மனந்திருந்த வாய்ப்பிருந்தால், மன்னிப்பதே சிறந்தது. வள்ளுவரே சொல்லியுள்ளார், “இன்னா செய்தாரை ஒறுத்தல் அவர் நாண நன்னயம் செய்துவிடால்” என்று. இன்னா செய்தவர்க்கே இப்படியென்றால், சிறுதவறுகளை செய்பவர்களை தண்டிப்பதை விட மன்னிப்பது சிறந்த ஒன்று.

தண்டிக்கும் போது ஒரு சில மணித்துளிகளுக்கோ, அன்று மட்டுமோ, அல்லது சிலநாட்களுக்கு வேண்டுமானால், ஒரு மனநிறைவிருக்கலாம், அல்லது மனநிறைவு ஏற்பட்டது போல் மாயநினைப்பு ஏற்படலாம். தவறினால் ஏற்பட்ட இழப்பு, இழப்புதானே, அதை தண்டிப்பது என்கிற தவறின் மூலம் சரி செய்யமுடியாது.  ஆனால் மன்னித்துவிட்டால், அதில் ஏற்படும் மனநிறைவும், தவறு இழைத்தவர்கள், வெட்கி, திருந்துவதற்காக வாய்ப்பும், மேலும் தன்னுயிருர் உள்ளவரை ஏற்படும் புகழும் மிகவும் ஏற்புக்குரியது. பரிமேலழகர் உலகம் அழியுமளவும் என்று “பொன்றுதலை” உலகின்மேலேற்றிச் சொல்லுவார். அதைக்காணுபவர்கள் யார்? ஆனால் ஒரு மனிதப்பிறவி வாழ்ந்து முடியும் காலம்வரை அப்பிறவியின் நற்குணங்கள் நினைந்து பாராட்டப்படும்.
