காலத்தி னாற்செய்த நன்றி சிறிதெனினும்

ஞாலத்தின் மாணப் பெரிது.

Trasliteration:

kAlaththi nArseydha nandRi siRidheninum

njAlaththin mANap peridhu

kAlaththinAr seydha – Done at the most appropriate time - when most needed (dire need)

nandRi - help

siRidheninum – though small in measure

njAlaththin – this world

mANapperidhu – much bigger than (this world)

Helping tendency is one of the best traits. That too, when done when most desired, (i.e. during the painful moments of the recipient), it is considered much bigger than the world itself. More than the size of the help, the moment and the thoughtfulness behind the help are considered big and important. The same thought is echoed in “bhAratha veNpA” where a verse says, for the help rendered earlier, even if three words are given in return, it will be a fitting one.

Parimelazagar in his commentary interprets the word “kAlaththinAl” as “when the danger comes to life”, which does not fit the bigger nature and thought conveyed in the verse.  It diminishes the glory of the verse. “Appropriate time or moment” is the right interpretation for that.

The tone of this verse is also somewhat poetically justifiable exaggeration.  Most commone praise would be to say to someone, “Even Indira, the head of celestials is no match for you”.  This is to show the persone referred to as an exalted being. A similar technique is used her to say, “Bigger than world”.

Bigger than the world is the help in time of need

However small in measure may be it is, in deed.

சிறிதெனினும் – அளவில் சிறிதாக இருந்தாலும் (சிறு துறும்பும் பல்குத்த உதவுவதுபோல்)

ஞாலத்தின் – இவ்வுலகை விட

மாணப் பெரிது – மிகப்பெரியதாம்.

உதவிசெய்யும் குணமே சிறந்தது. அதிலும், ஒருவருக்கு தக்க நேரத்தில் செய்யப்படுகிற உதவியானது (அதாவது அவருக்கு மிகுந்த துன்பம் விளைந்திருக்கும் தருணங்களில்), இவ்வுலகைவிட மிகப் பெரியதாக கருதப்படும்.

உதவியின் தருணமும், செய்யவேண்டுகிற எண்ணமும், அதன் அளவைவிட பெரிதாம்.  பாரதவெண்பாவில் “முன்னொருவன் செய்த உபகாரம் மூவுலகும் தன்னைக் கொடுத்தாலும் சாலுமே” காணப்படுகிறது.

பரிமேலழகர், “காலத்தினால்” என்பதை, இறுதி வந்த வேளையில், அதாவது ஒருவர் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்து வந்தபோது அல்லது இறப்பதற்கு முன்” என்று பொருள் செய்துள்ளார்.  இது குறளின் கருத்தின் வலியைக் குறைத்துவிடுகிறது.  “தக்க தருணம்” என்பதே சரியான பொருளாக இருக்கமுடியும்.  தவிரவும், அவர் “காலத்தினால்” என்பதை வேற்றுமை மயக்கமாகக் கூறுகிறார்.  “காலத்தி லேசெய்த” என்றிருந்தாலும் வெண்பா விதிகள் மீறப்பட்டிருக்காது – தளை தட்டியிருக்காது.

ஆனால் பரிமேலழகர் கருத்துக்கு இயைப, துறைமங்கலம் சிவப்பிரகாச சுவாமிகளின் “நன்னெறிப்” பாடலொன்று செல்கிறது. இதை அறஞ்செய்வதை வலியுறுத்தி, வருமுன் காத்தல் என்கிற எடுத்துக்காட்டோடு சொல்லுகிறார்.

“கொள்ளுங் கொடுங்கூற்றங் கொல்வான் குறுகுதன்முன்

உள்ளங் கனிந்தறஞ்செய துய்கவே – வெள்ளம்

வருவதற்கு முன்னர் அணைகோலி வையார்

பெருகுதற்கண் என்செய்வார் பேசு”

குறளின் கருத்து, சொல்வழக்கிலே, “உன்னைப்போல் இந்திரன் இல்லை” என்னும் உபசார வழக்கு போல சொல்லப்படுகிறது.  காலத்திலே செய்த உதவியின் சிறப்பை உயர்த்திக் காட்டவே, அதை “ஞாலத்தை விட” பெரியது என்றது.
