பயன்தூக்கார் செய்த உதவி நயன்தூக்கின்

நன்மை கடலின் பெரிது.

                                 (குறள் 103:  செய்நன்றியறிதல் அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

Payan thUkkAr seydha udhavi nayanthUkkin

Nanmai kaDalin peridhu

Payan thUkkAr – without expecting any returns

seydha – what they did

udhavi – as help

nayanthUkkin – if you analyze and weight its merits

Nanmai  - the goodness out of it is

kaDalin - ocean

peridhu – bigger than (the ocean)

Through the first three verses, vaLLuvar puts forth three different types of help extended by people of virtue. As Sanskrit literature would often use a phrase, “avyAja karuNAmUrthi” (a vyAja karuNAmUrthi – without reason, the compassionate God), helping without any reason is the first kind. Helping timely is the second kind. The third kind is without any expectation of return.

The person in this verse could have sought help from others in the past or may seek in the future, but when he or she helps, it is done without anything in kind or deed expected from the person helped.  He says that type of help is bigger than an ocean.

In the first verse of this chapter, he said for the help without reason, even the world and the skies can not be given as compensation. In the 2^nd verse, he said the timely help extended is much bigger than the world itself and now in the 3^rd verse, the help without any expectation in return is bigger than the ocean. Though there are subtle differences in the way they are said, he makes it amply clear that they are all different situations. Also, if the comparison is the same it would be boring and hence he has used different comparison to denote the bigness of kind help. The comparison of ocean makes sense in this verse, because the ocean does not give its wealth to human beings without anything in return.

Probably the constraints of kuraL meter have complelled vaLLuvar to write 3 verses instead of one. Or he seriously felt that they have to be said separately to be noticed by the readers.

Not done with expectation of return, the goodness of kind help

Is enormous in expanse of an ocean when merits measured up

பயன்தூக்கார் – எந்தவொரு எதிர்ப்பயனும் எதிர்பாராமல்

செய்த – ஒருவர் செய்கின்ற, செய்த

உதவி - உதவியை

நயன்தூக்கின் – சீர்தூக்கிப் பார்த்தால்

நன்மை – அதனால் (உதவியினால்) விளையும் நன்மை

கடலின் - கடலைவிட்

பெரிது - மிகப்பெரியது

இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் முதல் மூன்று குறள்களாலும், எவரும் தனக்கு உதவிசெய்யாமலிருந்தாலும் (காரணம் இன்றி செய்த உதவி), தானாக பிறருக்கு உதவி செய்தல், தக்க நேரத்தில், வேண்டிய உதவி செய்தல், பற்றி கூறிவிட்டு இப்போது, எந்தவொரு எதிர்பார்ப்பும், இல்லாமல் பிறருக்கு ஒருவர் செய்கின்ற உதவி பற்றி கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர். முதல் குறளுக்கும், இதற்கும் என்ன வேற்றுமை?  சமஸ்கிருத பக்தி இலக்கியங்களிலே “அவ்யாஜ கருணா மூர்த்தி” என்ற சொற்றொடர் நிறைய இடங்களில் இருக்கும். இதற்கு எவ்வித காரணமும் இல்லாமலே கருணையோடு இருக்கும் இறைவன் என்ற பொருள். 

இக்குறளில் கூறப்படுகிறவருக்கு பிறர் உதவி செய்திருக்கலாம், இவரும் உதவிகள் கோரியிருக்கலாம். ஆனாலும், தான் ஒருவருக்கு உதவும் போது, இதைச் செய்தால் இந்த பயன் என்ற எந்தவொரு நோக்கமும் இல்லாமல் செய்யபடுகிற உதவியைப் பற்றி குறிப்பிடுகிறார் வள்ளுவர். அவ்வாறு பயன் கருதாது செய்த உதவி, கடலைவிடவும் பெரியதென மதிக்கப்படும்.

முதலில் செய்த உதவி வையகம், வானம் இரண்டையும் கொடுத்தாலும் இணையில்லை என்றார். அடுத்த குறளில் உலகத்தை விடப்பெரியது என்றார். இப்போது, கடலை விடப் பெரியது என்கிறார். இந்த ஒப்புமைகளெல்லாம் உதவுதலில் அளவிறந்த சிறப்பை வலியுறுத்துவதோடு, ஒரே ஒப்புமையாக இருந்தால் சலிப்பு தட்டிவிடும் என்பதால் இருக்கலாம். தவிரவும் கடல் என்றது கடல் தன்னுள் இருக்கும் வளங்களையெல்லாம் மனித குலத்துக்கு, எவ்வித பயனும் கருதாது தருவது போலவாம் பயன்கருதாமல் ஒருவர் செய்கின்ற உதவி என்று வேண்டுமானாலும் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம்.
