அதிகாரம் 11 – செய்நன்றி அறிதல் (Gratitude) 

Being thankful to timely help rendered by others - "Gratitude" is an important trait of people of virtues and good living. vaLLuvar must have witnessed quite a bit of thanklessness in acts and beings during his times. So he devoted an entire chapter stressing the importance of this virtue. A thriving society’s back bone is the mutual help given and taken by the members of a community. It is an important virtue to be adhered by the members of society; the otherside of this would be the gratitude for the help. These two tread the society in good stead.

செய்யாமல் செய்த உதவிக்கு வையகமும்

வானகமும் ஆற்றல் அரிது.

Transliteration:

seyyAmal seydha udhavikku vaiyagamum

vAnagamum AtRal aridhu

seyyAmal  - when others have not done any help (or) not waiting for others to help first

seydha – volunteering on own will

udhavikku  - those that help

vaiyagamum – the skies and

vAnagamum – the earth

AtRal – a compensation or counter help

Aridhu - can not even be (a compensation)

Even when no one has done any help earlier, (whether needed or not), when someone volunteers to help others, that virtue can not be compensated even if the entire world and the skies are given to such an act of benevolence – is what is said in this verse.

There are similar thoughts expressed in the epics of Tamil literature “perungkadhai” and in “kamba rAmAyaNam”. 

My two verses for reflecting the same thought are given below. The second verse says that there is nothing which can be given as a compensatory gift for such benevolence, which is what vaLLuvar probably intended to say. Such virtue in a person is immeasurable and be not subject to anything that is measurable. The earth has dimensional limits and the heaven’s expanse is unknown. To add them in the same comparison may suit the poetic meter but not emphasize the thought in best possible light. The second verse reflects that thought.

Without ever having help from anyone, the help extended to others in need

Is an act of extreme benevolence and no compensation equals that deed!

தமிழிலே:

செய்யாமல் – பிறர் தனக்கு எவ்வுதவியும் செய்யாமலிருந்தாலும், அல்லது செய்யட்டும் என்று காத்திராமல்

செய்த – தானாக முன்வந்து

உதவிக்கு – பிறர்க்கு உதவி செய்யும் பெருங்குணத்தர்களுக்கு

வையகமும் - இவ்வுலகத்தையும்

வானகமும் - வானுலகத்தையும்

ஆற்றல் – கைம்மாறு, நிறையாக ஆற்றுதல் (உம் – விகுதி என்பதே கொடுத்தாலும் என்றும் சுட்டிவிடுகிறது)

அரிது – கொடுத்தாலும் நிறைவாக இராது

பிறர் தமக்கு செய்த உதவிக்கே மாற்றாக உதவி செய்யவேண்டும் என்கிற எண்ணம் உள்ளவர்கள் குறைவே. இதில் தனக்கு எந்த உதவியும், யாரும் செய்திராவிட்டாலும், தானாக முன்வந்து, பிறர்க்கு உதவி வேண்டும் போது, உதவுகின்ற பெரிய குணத்தவர்களுக்கு, இவ்வுலகையும், வானுலகையும் தந்தாலும் ஈடாகாது என்பதே இக்குறளின் கருத்து.

இக்கருத்தை பெருங்கதையும் , “பொன்னணி மார்பன் முன்னர் ஆற்றிய நன்னர்க் குதவும் பின் உபகாரம் அலைதிரைப் பௌவம் ஆடையாகிய நிலமுழுதும் கொடுப்பினும் நேரோ என்மரும்” என்று சொல்கிறது.  கம்பனும், கிட்கிந்தா காண்டத்தில் பின்வருமாறு சொல்கிறான். “ உதவாமல் ஒருவன் செய்த உதவிக்குக் கைம்மாறாக மதயானை அனைய மைந்த மற்றுமுண்டாக வற்றோ”.  

இன்றைய குறளின் கருத்தை வழிமொழிந்து இரண்டு குறள்கள் இதோ!  இரண்டாவது குறளில் அத்தகைய உதவிசெய்வாரின் சிறப்புக்கு ஈடாக ஈவதொன்றில்லை என்றது, அத்தகு உதவிகளை காணக்கூடிய பரிமாணங்களில் அளந்துவிடக்கூடாது என்பதினால்தான். வையமோ ஒரு பரிமாணத்துக்குள் அடங்குவது, வானமோ பரந்து விரிந்துகொண்டே இருப்பது. இவ்விரண்டையும் கவிதை நயத்துக்காக அளவுகளாகக் கொள்ளலாமேதவிர, கருத்தை சிறப்பாகச் சொல்ல அல்ல!
