பத்தாவது அதிகாரம் - இனியவை கூறல்: 

(Chapter 10: affable, pleasant speaking)

இன்சொலால் ஈரம் அளைஇப் படிறுஇலவாம்

செம்பொருள் கண்டார்வாய்ச் சொல்.

                       (குறள் 91:  இனியவை கூறல் அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

insolAl – sweet words are

Iram aLai ip – that filled with love,

paDiru –deceitfulness

ilavAm – devoid of  (deceitfulness)

semporuL – the virtuous ways

kanDAr – those who realize that (semporuL)

vAichchol – the words they utter

To be affable to everybody equally is a very rare trait in people. It is definitely one of the most desirable virtues of anyone, found in those rare souls that are equanimous, balanced and is able to handle extreme situations with poise and peasant demeanor. Parimelazhagar conjectures the ordering of chapters with his own reasoning, which sometimes fits, otherwise questionable. Here, he says that this is an important virtue required for people that are hospitable and hence has been placed following the chapter on hospitality. While that is definitely true, is this not a desirable virtue for every single soul on this earth?

The words of persons that are virtuous devoid of deceitfulness, full of love and compassion are sweet words that people love to hear. ThirumurugAtRuppadai of NakkIrar says, “anbudan nanmozhi aLaii” meaning, ‘the word that cause good mix with love and compassion’.  Similar usages are found in SirupANAtRuppaDai and maNimEkalai too.

 It is good to understand why both “being virtuous devoid of deceitfulness” and “heart filled with love” are needed for affability! Without love, though virtuous and devoid of deceitfulness, the words may not be nice to ears, more or less matter of factly and even blunt. Those who are of deceitful for their own selfish reasons, though profess to have love and compassion, may not be genuine in their words and their sweet words may be mere dressing, not from the heart.

Being the first verse, vaLLuvar sets the definition of “being the person of sweet words”

 தமிழிலே:

இன்சொலால் – இனிய சொல் என்பது

ஈரம் அளைஇப் – அன்பு நிறைந்த

படிறு - வஞ்சனை

இலவாம் - இல்லாமலிருக்கின்ற

செம்பொருள் - அறப்பொருளினை

கண்டார் - உணர்ந்தவர்களின்

வாய்ச்சொல் – வாயிலிருந்து வரும் சொற்களாம்.

எல்லோருக்கும் மனதில் இன்பத்தைக் கொடுக்கக்கூடிய இனிய சொற்கள் உடையவராயிருத்தலைப் பற்றிய அதிகாரமிது. பரிமேலழகர், இதை விருந்தோம்புவாருக்கு இன்றியமையாத பண்பு என்னும் காரணம் பற்றி விருந்தோம்பலுக்கு அடுத்து வந்தது என்பார். விருந்தோம்புவாருக்கு வேண்டிய, தேவையான பண்பு இதுவானாலும், இன்சொல் உடையராயிருத்தல் எல்லோருக்குமே வேண்டிய பண்புதானே!

அன்புநிறைந்த, வஞ்சனைகள் இல்லாத உண்மையானஅறத்தினை உணர்ந்தாரின் வாய்மொழியே இனிய சொற்களாகும். திருமுருகாற்றுபடை “அன்புடை நன்மொழி அளைஇ” என்கிறது. வஞ்சனைகள் இல்லார் அறத்தினை உணர்ந்தாலும், ஒருவருக்கு அன்பு நிறைந்த உள்ளமில்லையானால், அவருடைய வாய்மொழியானது இன்மொழியாயிராது. அதேபோல, அன்பு நிறைந்தவராயிருந்தாலும், சுயநலங்காரணமாக, வஞ்சனைக் கலந்த செயற்பாடு உடையவரானாலும், இனிய சொற்கள் வெறும் மேல் பூச்சாக்க இருக்குமே தவிர உள்ளார்ந்ததாக இராது. இதன் காரணம் பற்றியே இரண்டையும் இணைத்தே கூறியது. இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் முதற்குறளிலேயே இன்சொல் என்பதன் விளக்கத்தை வள்ளுவர் கூறுவது கவனிக்கத்தக்கது,
