மோப்பக் குழையும் அனிச்சம் முகந்திரிந்து

நோக்கக் குழையும் விருந்து.

                       (குறள் 90: விருந்தோம்பல் அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

mOppak kuzhaiyum  anichcham muganthirindhu

nOkkak kuzhaiyum virundhu

mOppak – when smelt

kuzhaiyum  - will wither

anichcham – the “anichham” flower

muganthirindhu – when the hosts show their displeasure or dislike to visiting guests

nOkkak – and when (guests) see that

kuzhaiyum  - will shrivel (in their hearts)

virundhu – the guests

“Anicham flower” is a very tender one. In literary works of Tamil it has been used to compare with the softness of women. This flower used to be worn as a garland around the neck and the hands and a long garland for the chest which is conveyed by the sangam poetry in kaliththogai (26:1-3) (அரிநீர் அவிழ்நீலம் அல்லி அனிச்சம் புரிநெகிழ் முல்லை நறவோடு அமைந்த தெரிமலர் கண்ணியும் தாரும் நயந்தார்)

This flower has been quoted in other verses of ThirukkuraL as well as the literary works of later eras.  This flower is water borne, and when worn as a garland it does not shrink.  But when somebody smells it, it immediately becomes and tender shrink. This example of “Anichcha flower” for softness has been used by vaLLuvar in a few more verses too.

This flower only shrinks when smelt, but a guest will shrivel, even with a small expression of disgust or pain due to hardship in the face of the host. Guests that are self-respecting and fear humiliation or shame would be very sensitive to this and would not want to be the cause of such pain to the hosts.

It is to be noted that the change of face could either be due to utter disgust for the guests or genuinely a problem for the host. The first case would show the host in a bad light; the second would show how the host’s pain would be a pain for the guests also and shows the hospitality in good light. Since it is the last verse of the chapter of hospitality, we need to ponder if vaLLuvar would have ended the chapter on a positive note or negative note.

அனிச்சமலர் மிகவும் மென்மையானது. இலக்கியங்களில் பெண்களின் மென்மையோடு ஒப்பிட்டு பேசப்பட்ட ஒரு மலர். இதை மார்பணியும் மாலையாகத் (தார்) தொடுத்து அணிந்துகொண்டதையும், கண்ணியாக (வளையமாக) கைகளிலும், கழுத்திலும் அணிந்துகொண்டதையும் “அரிநீர் அவிழ்நீலம் அல்லி அனிச்சம் புரிநெகிழ் முல்லை நறவோடு அமைந்த தெரிமலர் கண்ணியும் தாரும் நயந்தார்” (கலித்.மரு. 26:1-3) என்னும் கலித்தொகை பாடல் வரி தெரிவிக்கிறது.

மற்ற சில திருக்குறள்களிலும், பிற்கால இலக்கியங்களிலும் அனிச்சமலர் பெண்களில் மென்மையைக் குறிக்க கையாளப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

இம்மலர் நீரிலே தோன்றும் ஒரு மலர் என்பதும், இதை மாலையாக அணியும் போது இது வாடாமல் இருந்திருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதையும் இந்த பாடல் குறிப்பால் உணர்த்துகிறது. எனவே இம்மலர் தொட்டால் சுருங்கியல்ல, முகர்ந்தால் மட்டுமே வாடக்கூடியது என்பதால், வெளிவிடும் மூச்சிலே இருக்கும் வெப்பமும், அதன் வேதியியல் (கரியமில வாயு) இயல்பும் இம்மலரை வாடச்செய்திருக்கலாம் என்பதும் தெரிகிறது.

இந்த நுட்பமான, முகர மட்டுமே வாடக்கூடியத் தன்மையை மிகவும் அழகாகக் குறளில் எடுத்துக் கையாண்டுள்ளார் வள்ளுவர். அனிச்ச மலர் முகர்ந்தால் மட்டுமே வாடக்கூடியது. ஆனால் தொடாமல், வெறும் வெறுப்பை உமிழும் பார்வையாலே, வேண்டாவிருந்து என்பதை உணர்த்துவதைக் கண்டதுமே, மானத்துக்கஞ்சும் விருந்தினர் வருந்தி வாடிடுவர்.  இக்குறளைவேறு பொருளிலும் கொள்ளலாம். தம்மை வரவேற்று விருந்தளித்தவர்களின் முகமானது அவர்களுக்கு வரும் துன்பத்தினால் வாடுவதைக் கண்டதும், தமக்கே அத்துன்பம் நிகழ்ந்ததைப் போல் எண்ணி வருந்துவர் விருந்தினர். இவ்வாறு பொருள் கொள்ள விருந்தோம்பலின் சிறப்பும், விருந்தோம்பும் பண்பாளருக்கு துன்பம் வரும்போது, அது விருந்தினர்களை மிகவும் வருத்தத்தில் ஆழ்த்திவிடும் என்பது தெரிகிறது. இக்குறள் இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் இறுதிக்குறளாகையால், வள்ளுவர் அதை விருந்தோம்பலின் உயரியதன்மையைச் சொல்லி முடித்திருப்பாரா, அல்லது விருந்தோம்பாமையின் இழிமையைச் சொல்லி முடித்திருப்பாரா என்று எண்ண வேண்டியிருக்கிறது.
