வழுத்தினாள் தும்மினேன் ஆக அழித்தழுதாள் 


யாருள்ளித் தும்மினீர் என்று.

                           (குறள் 1317: புலவி நுணுக்கம் அதிகாரம்)


வழுத்தினாள் - என்னை வாழ்த்தின்னாள் (நீடு வாழ்கென்று)

தும்மினேன் ஆக - நான் தும்மியதற்கு

அழித்து அழுதாள் 
- உடனேயே அவ்வாழ்த்தலை மறந்து அழுதாள்!

யார் உள்ளித் - யார் உங்களை நினைத்து

தும்மினீர் என்று - நீங்கள் தும்மினீர் என்று?

மீண்டும் தும்மலைப் பற்றிய குறள்! இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் இரண்டாவது குறளில் தன்னுடைய கவனத்தை ஈர்த்து, தாம் “நீடு வாழ்க” என்று சொல்வதற்காகத் தலைவன் தும்மியதாகச் சொன்னாள் தலைவி. இக்குறள் அதன் தொடர்ச்சியே! காதற்தலைவன் வாயிலான கூற்று இது. “நான் தும்மினேன்; அவள் உடனே என்னை ‘நீடு வாழ்க’ என்று சொன்னாள். ஆனால் அதை உடனே மறந்து அழவும் செய்தாள், வேறு எந்த பெண் என்னை நினைந்ததால் நான் தும்மினேனோ என்று.” ஒரு தும்மலில் இவ்வளவு சிக்கல் இருக்கும் என்று தெரிந்தால் தலைவன் தும்மியேயிருக்கமாட்டானோ என்னவோ!  தும்மினால் யாரோ நம்மை நினைப்பதால்தான் தும்முகிறோம் என்று பெரியவர்கள் கூறுவதும்கூட 2000 வருடத்துக்கும் மேலாக இருந்துவரும் ஒன்றுதான் போலுள்ளது.

Transliteration:

vazhuttinAL tumminEn Aga azittazhudAL

yAruLLit tumminIr enRu

vazhuttinAL – She said “Bless you”

tumminEn Aga – as I sneezed

azitt(u) azhudAL – immediatey, forgetting that, she also cried

yAr uLLit – wondering who was thinking about me

tumminIr enRu – so that I sneezed!

Once again, a verse about sneezing! In the second verse of this chapter the maiden said that her beloved ‘sneezed’ to attract her attention and for her to say, “Bless you” to be rid of the love-quarrel between them. This verse seems to be a continuation of that verse. Now having said, “Bless you”, she immediately changed her stance and began crying wondering which other woman was thinking about him for him to sneeze! If an ordinary sneeze would invite so much trouble, perhaps he would not have sneezed at all.  It is also known from this verse, that this habit of saying “Bless you” has been there in the culture for over 2000 years.

“She blessed as I sneezed; but discarding that soon she cried

 asking, ‘which woman was thinking about you’ that I sneezed”

தும்மினேன்யான் வாழ்த்திப்பின் யார்நினைக்கத் தும்மலென்று

விம்மியழு  தூடினா ளே!
