செற்றார்பின் செல்லாப் பெருந்தகைமை காமநோய்

உற்றார் அறிவதொன்று அன்று.

                           (குறள் 1255: நிறையழிதல் அதிகாரம்)

செற்றார்பின்  - பகைத்தாற்போல் விட்டுச் சென்றார் பின்னர்

செல்லாப் - தொடர்ந்து செல்லாத

பெருந்தகைமை - பெரும் மாண்பும், மனவடக்கமும்

காமநோய் உற்றார் - காமநோயால் பீடிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்டிர்

அறிவதொன்று அன்று - அறியக்கூடிய ஒன்று அல்ல.

உன்னை மறந்து பகைத்தார்போல் சென்றவரை நீயும் மறந்துவிடேன் என்று கூறிய தோழிக்கு இவ்வாறு காதற்தலைவி பதிலிறுப்பாள். பகையைப் போன்றே விட்டகன்றாராயினும், காதற் தலைவன்பின் மனம் செல்லாத மாண்பும் மனவடக்கமும், காமநோயால் பீடிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்டிர் அறியக்கூடியது அல்ல. காதற்தலைவியின் கூற்றாகக் கூறப்பட்டாலும், இக்கூற்று இருபாலருக்குமே பொதுவாகதாகவும் கொள்ளலாம்.

Transliteration:

cheRRArpin – behind the the beloved who left as if in enemity

cheLLAp – not going

peruntagaimai – the dignity and self-control

kAmanOi uRRAr – for those that are lustful

aRivadonRu anRu – would not know

cheRRArpin cheLLAp peruntagaimai kAmanOi

uRRAr aRivadonRu anRu

He left you forgetting as if in enemity and why won’t you let go off his thoughts and forget him?, asks the maidens’ friend. Maiden answers thus: Though he left as if in enemity, not going behind the lover, losing honor and dignity is not possible for a person who is afflicted by the disease of lust. Though this verse is said from the viewpoint of a maiden, it is applicable for both genders.

Afflicted by the disease of lust, she wouldn’t know dignity

Or self-control, though her beloved left her as if in enemity!
