புன்கண்ணை வாழி மருள்மாலை எம்கேள்போல்

வன்கண்ண தோநின் துணை.

                           (குறள் 1222: பொழுது கண்டிரங்கல் அதிகாரம்)

புன்கண்ணை - துன்பத்திலாழ்ந்திலுள்ளாய்

வாழி மருள்மாலை - நீ வாழ்க மயங்கியிருக்கும் மாலையே

எம்கேள்போல் - எனக்கணுக்கமானவர்போல்

வன்கண்ணதோ - கொடிய நெஞ்சினரோ

நின் துணை - உன்னுடைய துணையும்.

மயங்கும் மாலைப் பொழுதே, நீ துன்பத்தில் இருக்கிறாயே. ஒருவேளை உன்னுடைய துணையும் என் துணைபோல் கொடியதோ? அந்திப் பொழுதின், ஒளியிழந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் தன்மையை, மாலை நேரத்தின் துன்பமாக உருவகம் செய்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். தவிரவும் தம்துணையை கொடிய நெஞ்சினர் என்று கூறி, அவர் மாலை நேரத்து வந்தணையாமைபற்றி தம் வருத்தத்தையும் கூறுகிறாள் காதற்தலைவி

Transliteration:

punkaNNai vAzi maruLmAlai emkELpOl

vankaNNa dOnin tunAi

punkaNNai – You’re in distress

vAzi maruLmAlai – May you live long, the lusterless evening

emkELpOl – like my beloved (who has left me not coming back in the evening)

vankaNNadO – is cruel

nin tunAi – your companion?

O! lustre-losing evening, you’re in distress. Is your companion also as cruel as mine? In this verse, a metaphorical suggestion of evening losing light to the distress of evening is made cleverly by vaLLuvar. Also the maiden refers to her beloved as hard-hearted because he has not come back by the evening to make her evening a pleasurable one.

“O! shineless evening! You’re in distress and pain

 Is your companion as hard-hearted as mine?”
