இன்னாது இனன்இல்ஊர் வாழ்தல் அதனினும்

இன்னாது இனியார்ப் பிரிவு.

                        (குறள் 1158: பிறிவாற்றாமை அதிகாரம்)

இன்னாது - துன்பமே

இனன் - சூரியன் (இதை தம்மினத்தோரான தோழியர் என்பார் பல உரையாசிரியர்கள்)

இல் ஊர் வாழ்தல் - இல்லாத ஊரிலே வாழ்வதென்பது

அதனினும் இன்னாது - அதைவிட துன்பமானது

இனியார்ப் பிரிவு - உள்ளத்துக்கு இனியவரான காதலரின் பிரிவு.

இனன் என்ற சொல்லை இனம் என்றளவில் கொண்டு தோழியரென்றும், தம்மினத்தவர் என்றும் பரிமேலழகர் முதல் பல உரையாசிரியர்கள் செய்துள்ளனர். அவ்வாறு கொண்டாலும் பொருள் வருமாயினும், வள்ளுவர், இனன் என்பதை ஆதவன், சூரியன் என்ற பொருளிலேயே ஆண்டிருப்பதாகத் தோன்றுகிறது. அதாவது, சூரியனில்லாத ஊர் இருள் சூழ்ந்து வாழ்தற்கு துன்பமாகுமாப்போல், தமக்கு இனியரானவரின் பிரிவானது, அதனினும் துன்பம் தருவது என்று காதற்தலைவி புலம்புவதாகக் கூறுகிறார். தன்னுடைய காதலரை சூரியனுக்கு ஒப்பாக காதலி நினைப்பதும், அவரது இருப்பே வாழ்வில் வெளிச்சமென்று உணர்வதும் சரிதானே? அதேபோல், காதலனின் பிரிவும் இருளினும் துன்பமானது என்று நினைப்பதும் சரிதானே?

காதல் வயப்பட்ட பெண்ணுக்கு இனத்தை விட அல்லது தோழியரைவிட காதலனே உற்றவன் என்பதால் மற்ற உரையாசிரியர்கள் கருதுவதும் சரியாகவே தோன்றினும், மேற்கூறிய பொருளே பொருந்துகிறது.

Transliteration:

innAdu inanilUr vAzdal adaninum

innAdu iniyAr pirivu

innAdu – painful it is

inan – sun (most commentators interpret as the kith and kin or friends of the maiden)

il Ur vAzdal – living in the city devoid of (sun or kith and kin or friends)

adaninum innAdu – more painful that that is

iniyAr pirivu – the separation of that who is sweet to the heart.

Almost all the commentators including Parimelazagar, have interpreted the word “inan” as kith and kin or as the friends of the maiden, miserable with sepatation. Though we can interpret the word to mean as the say, it makes perfect sense to understand the word to refert to “sun”, which gives light. A town devoid of sun is dark and gloomy and hence is miserable. Here vaLLuvar alludes that the maiden feels, the separation from her beloved is gloomier than that. It is understandable that the maiden feels that her lover brings light to her life and hence can be equated to sun; likewise her feeling that his separation brings gloom more severe than sun not being there, also is meaningful.

As others intepret, the maiden feels that, more than not having kith and kin or friends, gloomier and painful it is to be separated from the lover. Though a nice interepretation, probably not what VaLLuvar intended.

“Miserable it is to live in a town devoid of sunlight

 Worse than that is the separation of sweetheart”
