கண்ணொடு கண்இணை நோக்கொக்கின் வாய்ச்சொற்கள்

என்ன பயனும் இல.

                        (குறள் 1100: குறிப்பறிதல் அதிகாரம்)

கண்ணொடு - பார்வையினால், ஒருவர் கண்ணோடு,

கண் இணை - மற்றொருவர் கண் இணய

நோக்கு ஒக்கின் - இருவரது காதலாகிய நோக்கமும் ஒத்துப்போகுமாயின்

வாய்ச்சொற்கள் - வாயிலிருந்து வரும் வெற்று சொற்களால்

என்ன பயனும் இல - ஒரு பயனும் இல்லை

மிகவும் மேற்கோளிடப்படும் குறளிது. காதல் வயப்பட்ட இருவரது உள்ள வேட்கையை அவர்கள் கண்களால் பரிமாறிக்கொள்ளும்போது, ஒருவர் கண்ணோடு மற்றவரது கண்கள் இணைய, இருவரது நோக்கமும் இணைந்திருப்பதால், அவர்களிடையே வேறு வாய்வழிச் சொற்களால் என்ன பயன் இருந்துவிடமுடியும்?

கம்பன் இதையொட்டியே மிதிலைப்படலத்தில் வரும், “கண்ணொடு கண்ணினை கௌவி ஒன்றை ஒன்றுண்ணவும்” வரிகளைச் சொன்னான் போலும்.

Transliteration:

kaNNoDu kaNiNai nOkkokkin vAichoRkaL

enna payanum ila

kaNNoDu – between the lovers, eyes of one person

kaN iNai – when join the eyes of the other

nOkko(u) okkin – and their mutual glance conveys their desire

vAichoRkaL – mere words from mouth

enna payanum ila – what use are they?

Another verse which is quoted very often. When, lovers with so much desire in their hearts, exchange through their mutual glances and the desires being the same of togetherness, what use is it of words from their mouths? None !

Kambar, conveys a similar thought in chapter of Mithila, where Rama and Seetha meet for the first time. The phrase he uses to describe the same is very unique. He says their eyes sieze, grasp each others and devour, which shows extreme desire between the two.

“What use is it in a meaningless mouth-uttered words

 When the lovers eyes mutually grasp, revealing hearts”
