கரப்பவர்க்கு யாங்கொளிக்கும் கொல்லோ இரப்பவர்

சொல்லாடப் போஒம் உயிர்.

                        (குறள் 1070: இரவச்சம் அதிகாரம்)

கரப்பவர்க்கு - தம்மிடம் உள்ளதை மறைப்போர்க்கு மட்டும்

யாங்கு - எங்கே சென்று

ஒளிக்கும் கொல்லோ? - ஒளிந்துகொள்ளும் அவர்கள் உயிர்?

இரப்பவர் - இரந்து கேட்பவர்களுக்கு

சொல்லாடப் - இல்லையென்று கரப்போர் சொல்லைக் கேட்க

போஒம் உயிர் - அவர்கள் இறக்கப் போக நீங்கும் உயிர்?

தனது வறுமையானது புறமாகிய தன் உடலை வருத்த, அதற்காகத் தன் அகத்தே ஒளி விடும் மெய் அறிவை விலக்கி, அறியாமையை நிறுத்தி, செல்வன் ஒருவனிடம் சென்று, 'ஒன்றைத் தரவேண்டும்' என இரப்பானாகில், அச்செல்வன் 'இல்லை' என்று மறுக்க, அதைக் கேட்டபோதே அவ்வறுமையாளன் உயிர் விடமாட்டானோ? மானத்தால் உயிர் துறப்பான்! என்று கீழ்காணும் நாலடியார் பாடல் கூறுகிறது.

புறத்துத்தன் இன்மை நலிய அகத்துத்தன்

நன்ஞானம் நீக்கி நிறீஇ ஒருவனை

ஈயாய் எனக்கென் றிரப்பானேல் அந்நிலையே

மாயானோ மாற்றி விடின்.

இக்கருத்தையே வள்ளுவர் கேள்வியாய் வைக்கிறார் இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் இறுதிக் குறளில். தாம் ஒருவரை இரந்து கேட்க அவர் இல்லையெனும் போது, மானத்துக்கஞ்சி போகின்ற இரப்போர்க்குள்ள உயிர், இல்லையென்று வாய் கூசாமல் சொல்லி உள்ளதை ஒளிக்கும் கஞ்சர்களைப் பொறுத்தவரை எங்கே ஒளிந்துகொள்கிறது. ஒன்றைத் துறந்தே ஒன்றைப் பெறுவது உலக நியதியாயின், கரவோர், தங்கள் மனங்களில் இரக்கத்தைத் துறந்ததால்தான் அவர்கள் உயிர் நீங்கா நின்றதோ?

Transliteration:

Karappavarkku yAngoLikkum kollO irappavar

sollADap pOom uyir

Karappavarkku – For those that hide their wealth from those seek alms or beg

yAng(u) - where will it go

oLikkum kollO – and hide their life force?

Irappavar – which for those who beg

sollADap – to hear the word “No” from those who hide

pOom uyir – the life force that leaves

When the poverty is painful to the body, to go and beg blocking the sense of true knowledge, those who hide and refuse to give, men of pride and honor would die for that – says a nAlaDiyAr poem. vaLLuvar says the same thing by posing a question in the final verse of this chapter.

Where does the life force, that leaves those who beg out of necessity, fearing shame, hide for those who without that sense of shame hide their possession and readily refuse a helping hand? – asks vaLLuvar in this verse.

“Where does life-force hide for those misers that hide their wealth of greed

 When it leaves when refused out of shame for those that beg for their need?”
