அன்புநாண் ஒப்புரவு கண்ணோட்டம் வாய்மையொடு
ஐந்துசால் ஊன்றிய தூண்.

                                    (குறள் 983: சான்றாண்மை அதிகாரம்)

அன்பு - பிறரிடம் அன்போடிருத்தல்

நாண் - பழி பாவங்களுக்கு அஞ்சுதல்

ஒப்புரவு - உலகத்தாரோடு (ஊரோடு) ஒத்து ஒழுகுதல்

கண்ணோட்டம் - பிறர்க்கிரங்கும் அருட்பார்வை, கேண்மை

வாய்மையொடு - உண்மையே பேசுதல்
ஐந்து - ஆகிய ஐந்து பண்பு நலன்களும்

சால் ஊன்றிய - சான்றாண்மை என்னும் சால்பினைத் தாங்கும்

தூண் - தூண்களாம்

ஒருவரை மேன்மையானவராக நிலை நிறுத்துவனவற்றில், பிறரிடம் அன்போடிருத்தல், பழி பாவங்களுக்கு அஞ்சுதல், ஊரோடு ஒத்து வாழும் தன்மை, பிறர்க்கிரங்கும் அருட்பார்வை, மற்றும் எப்போதும் உண்மையே பேசுதல் என்று சொல்லப்படும் ஐந்து குண நலன்களும், தாங்கிப் பிடிக்கும் தூண் போன்றவைகளாம். இத்துண்களில் ஒன்று குலைந்தாலும், மேன்மையான நிலை என்னும் கூரை ஆட்டங்கண்டு முடிவில் வீழ்ந்துவிடும்

Transliteration:

anbunAN oppuravu kaNNOTTam vAimaiyODu

aindusAl UnRiya thUN

Anbu – being compassionate and loving

nAN – being afraid of shame of blame

oppuravu – being in agreement with the worlds ways

kaNNOTTam – having compassionate and kind look at others

vAimaiyODu – being truthful

aindu – these five virtues

sAl UnRiya – sublimity bearing

thUN - pillars

The roof of sublimity places its weight  and is supported on the five pillars of virtues – being compassionate and loving to others, being afraid of shame of blame, being in agreement with the way of of the world, having kindly look at others and being truthful.  Even if one of them is shaky or collapses, then the roof becomes shaky and eventually falls, says this verse.

“Compassion for people, shame of blame, agreement with the world,

 kindliness and being truthful are the five pillars of sublmity, to hold”
