இருமனப் பெண்டிரும் கள்ளும் கவறும்

திருநீக்கப் பட்டார் தொடர்பு.

                               (குறள் 920: வரைவில் மகளிர் அதிகாரம்)

இருமனப் பெண்டிரும் - உள்ளத்தை ஒருவருக்கும் உடலை வேறொருவருக்குமென்று செய்யும், வஞ்சப் பரத்தையர்,

கள்ளும் - சிந்தையை மயக்கும் போதையூட்டும் கள்

கவறும் - சூதாட்டம் ஆகிய மூன்றும்

திரு நீக்கப்பட்டார் - செல்வம் நீக்கப்பட்டாரோடு

தொடர்பு - நட்பாக இருப்பவை.

உள்ளத்தையும் உடலையும் வெவ்வேறு இடங்களில் வைத்திருக்கும் வஞ்ச நெஞ்சுடைய பரத்தையர், சிந்தையை மயக்குறுத்துவதும் போதையைத் தருவதுமாகிய கள், மற்றும் சூதாட்டம் ஆகிய மூன்றுமே செல்வமானது நீங்கியவர்களோடு நட்பாக இருப்பவை. வளத்தை இழந்தவர்களிடமே இவை மூன்றும் தொடர்பில் இருப்பதென்பது, இவற்றைக்கொண்டிருப்பதாலேயே ஒருவர் வளங்களையும், செல்வத்தையும் இழப்பார் என்பதைக் குறிக்கத்தான்.

இம்மூன்றையும் குறிக்கும் திரிகடுகப்பாடலொன்று, வேசியரைச் சேர்வதாகிய நீசத்தன்மையும், கள்ளுண்டலாகிய பிறர் எச்சிலை யுண்பதும், பொய்யை மேற்கொள்வதாய சூதாடுமிடத்திற் சேர்வதும் அறவழி நில்லாதார் தொழில்களாம் என்கிறது. அப்பாடல்:

"புலைமயக்கம் வேண்டிப் பொருட்பெண்டிர்த் தோய்தல்

கலமயக்கம் கள்ளுண்டு வாழ்தல் - சொலைமுனிந்து

பொய்மயக்கம் சூதின்கண் தங்கல் இவை மூன்றும்

நன்மையி லாளர் தொழில்.”

Transliteration:

irumanap peNDirum kaLLum kavaRum

thirunIkkap paTTAr thoDarbu

irumanap peNDirum – whores that share their heart and the body with two different persons

kaLLum – the toddy

kavaRum – and gambling are,

thiru nIkkappaTTAr – with those who have made to lose their wealth,

thoDarbu – in friendship

The harlots that keep their body and the soul in two places, the intoxicating toddy and the gambling are the three vices that are in friendship with someone who is out to lose his wealth. In other words, one will lose all that he has if he succumbs to the three vices mentioned here.

A poem in ThirikaDugam echoes the same thought. Those who do not tread the virtuous ways will have lowly act of being with whores, drink toddy which is like tasting what others have tasted, and gamble which forces them to lie.

“Company of whores, toddy and gamble are with

those that are destined to lose all their wealth”
