உட்பகை அஞ்சித்தற் காக்க உலைவிடத்து

மட்பகையின் மாணத் தெறும்.

                        (குறள் 883: உட்பகை அதிகாரம்)

உட்பகை - அருகிலிருந்துகொண்டே பகையாக இருப்பவர்களை

அஞ்சித் - அஞ்சுக, அவரிடமிருந்து

தற்காக்க - தன்னைக் காத்துக்கொள்ளவேண்டும்

உலைவிடத்து - (ஏனெனில் நாம் ஏற்கனவே) வருந்தி தளர்வுறும்போது,

மட்பகையின் - மட்பாண்டத்தை வனையும் குயவருடைய கூர்மையான கருவியினைவிட

மாணத் - மிக்கு

தெறும் - அழிக்கும்

உடனிருந்து கொண்டே பகையை நெஞ்சில் சுமந்து, வஞ்சத்தோடு இருப்பவரிடமிருந்து ஒருவர் தம்மை பாதுகாத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் நாம் தளர்வுற்றிருக்கும்போது, வேண்டிய உருவை உருவாக்கியபின், மீதி இருக்கும் மண்ணை, அறுப்பது தெரியாமல், அறுத்து நீக்கும் குயவன் கைக் கருவியைப் போன்றவர்கள்.

குயவன் கைக்கருவி மட்பாண்டத்தை வனைவதற்காகவே எனினும், அது வேண்டாத மண்ணை அது குழைந்த (தளர்வுற்ற நிலைக்கு உவமிக்கப்பட்டது) நிலையில் இருக்கும் போது அறுப்பது தெரியாமல் அறுத்து நீக்கிவிடும். செய்வது குயவனேயாயினும், கருவியை மண்ணுக்குப் பகையாகச் சொன்னது நயமிக்கதே.

ஆனாலும் இவ்வுவமையில் உறுத்துவது, மட்பகை அறுப்பது ஒன்றை உருவாக்கவே. ஆனால் உட்பகை அறுப்பது, ஒருவரை கெடுத்து அழிப்பதற்கு.

Transliteration:

uTpagai anjiththaR kAkka ulaiviDaththu

maTpagaiyin mANath theRum

uTpagai – Enemies within

anjith – must be feared

thaRkAkka – one must protect self form such enemies

ulaiviDaththu – During troubled times

maTpagaiyin – worse tha the potters tool

mANath – even more

theRum – will destroy.

One must fear and protect self from the people that nurture hatred and foster enmity inside, because they are worse than the potter’s knife that is used to remove the excess mud when he is making pottery.

Though potters’ knife is used to create a new pottery, it is only to remove the excess clay (which reflects the state of mud which is conducive to remove). Though the act is done by the potter, the metaphor “mud’s enemy” is a nicely used.

However what is somewhat not fitting in this metaphor is that, potters’ tool is just to make a nice pottery, not to destroy something; but the enemies within are out to destroy.

“An enemy withing is worse than potters’ knife

 One must guard self from such, to save his life”
